“Not bad, really”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2011

My wife and I stayed here because it was close to the Dunvegan Hotel, and after the Bonfire Night Fireworks, I didn't feel like driving back to Portree, so we stayed here.
We arrived late and the staff was nice enough to delay the dinner service so we could get dinner; and the steak my wife got was rather good! Food was otherwise ok, and for a hungry traveller, I can't complain. The rooms were just fine - though the bed was a little hard.

We found the service to be very personal, friendly and helpful - contrary to any reviews suggesting otherwise.

In short: if you're a weary tourist and need a night's stay, this place is just fine.

“so bad it was almost funny”

Im regularly over in skye and the west highlands and although the weather the past few days was awful, the meal at the dunvegan hotel was even worse...

We opted to eat in the bar in front of the fire as the restaurant was empty, although being told off for putting a log on the fire we were still looking forward to a pleasent evening...
starters were garlic bruschetta - at £4.50 we expected something much more than we got - one tiny piece of garlic bread with soggy tomato on top... that was it...
mushroom risotto was tasteless and cool and was served with one piece of lettuce and cucumber... the fish rather soggy and the chips were sparse...

i know its not supposed to be fine dining and prices in general have all increased but this meal was laughable, in fact i wondered if the owners were suggesting i lose weight due to the child sized portions...

asked if we fancied desert, depsite still being hungry we couldnt bear parting with more money for something almost insulting in return.

on route back to the B&B we considered grabbing something from the garage but instead went to the bar next door to the misty island hotel where the barman seemed none suprised at our sorry tale and produced fresh fruit scones with our pints - now thats service!!! should have gone there for our meal instead...

“A place your ageing relatives would have stayed in the 70s!”

We only dined at the hotel and didn't stay there, so I can't comment on the rooms. We called in at 4.30 pm and were met by a fairly friendly man who fitted us in for 7.45, telling us how lucky we were to get in without booking at least a day in advance. We arrived at 7.30 and went into the bar, which was spookily similar to some of those I stayed in as a child in Blackpool back in the late 1960s (shudder). Although our host greeted us, he then proceeded to disappear for the best part of 10 mins (with no explanation) leaving us standing somewhat bemused and drinkless at the bar. We did eventually get served, but then waited and waited to be called to our table in the 'busy' restaurant. My wife finally went to ask the waitresses, only to find out that they had been wondering when we were going to come!

The 'busy' restaurant looked well over half empty to me, but it still took over 45 mins to produce the starters (from ordering), one of which was a massive lump of supermarket pate with two small biscuits, the other, two deep-fried stuffed peppers with a side salad that consisted of a small heap of roughly chopped iceberg and tomato, completely undressed. - certainly fully in keeping with the whole 1960/70s theme. Although my wife's main course was really nice (grilled sole), my beer battered fish appeared to have been cooked in luke warm oil, then summarily dumped, along with plenty of oil, straight onto the plate - to describe it as soggy would be an understatement.

The waitresses (three of them) were very pleasant and apologised profusely for the delays, which were apparently due to the fact that they were so busy. There seemed to be no sense of irony, despite the fact that the restaurant was half empty, and one of them would have struggled to be gainfully employed, let alone three. I still had to wave at them to get another drink though, even though we were only 5 feet away. Make no mistake, this is verry far from good old-fashioned slow service, 'efficiency' appears to be a completely foreign concept!

Overall, the service is exceedingly slow (but polite), the food is poor, and the decor is straight out of 'Life on Mars'; the prices are however reasonable! Avoid!

“Basic Digs with Good Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2011

Some previous harsh reviews might put some off but don't be.
This is basic accommodation but provided its not a romantic weekend away in luxury that you want it should be fine.
There were 5 of us that had spent 12 hours on motorbikes in the pouring rain so to get there and fine the radiators and shower were both hot we had everything we needed.
Did not have dinner hear so cannot comment
Breakfast was great!

“GREAT PLACE WITH REAL FOOD !!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2011

I have been a vistor to skye for some years and having read the reviews on the dunvegan hotel I thought I should say something of my experiences, I have eaten in many hotels and resturants on skye and found the dunvegan hotel to be one of the best in my price range, the food and staff are first class, the portions and menu choice are perfect after a long day walking but it is best to book. This however is not a mainland establishment and is situated on the northwest tip of skye so don't expect some fancy get dressed up hotel-resturant ,it is not. It is well located for walkers and vistors to dunvegan and given the few places to eat in the village a good choice ! I have read some of the reviews and the decore for me is not a problem I am not eating there to look at wall paper and carpet but for the friendly manner in which the hotel is run. All in all good portion size, good food and clean, with fantastic views most recommended.
