“Out of this world - in every meaning ...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Everything you read about this place is true: The hotel is a haven of comfort, the staff is – though partially VERY English – incredibly nice, warm hearted and natural ... and the food is really THAT good. Fresh, simple, not too quirky and absolutely convincing by its mere basic quality. In the wine list, prestige bottles are a bit on the steep side and sometimes ridiculously overpriced; but then there are relatively cheap and fair discoveries to be made. (This, however, concerns ALL oft he hotels and restaurants that we visited this time – particularly those in Edinburg.) As you’re completely out oft the world, several days of bad weather – particularly in winter, with gales – is no good news here, but you can spend hours in the lounge and drive a bit around, anyway.
I’d be back there any time!

Dear MonsieurCB,

It has taken me some time to catch-up with replies to our reviews. The Restaurant reviews are so fast and furious, sometimes, I get caught-up with making sure these are all covered and neglect the Restaruant with Rooms reviews.! However, I could not let you lovely comments go by without saying thank you for writing. Everyone here is delighted that you had a good experience, despite the Skye weather in December! We try to make everyone feel warm and welcome whatever the time of year and hope that one day, you will make your way to our doors again, for more pampering and good food and wine. Thanks again! SS

“Sublime.”

A one night getaway for the beloved and myself, our only night away from the mutant ninja teenagers while on a month long trip to Scotland from the land Down Under. So it had better be good. And it was.

Delightful afternoon tea on arrival, and a very friendly welcome. Flexible dinner reservation which we needed after the belly swelling mince pies, Christmas cake, banana bread and the infused cream that we needed to recover from before we could even consider eating dinner.

The room was lovely, modern and warm (we turned the heating off and opened a window) with a gorgeous bath, delectable toiletries and fluffy towels, robes and slippers. We had to ask for an iron although a trouser press was ready and waiting in the cupboard??? A sweet little welcome pack of fruit and tablet for the non-Scot was very welcome.

Dinner. Well, amazing. Starters delicious. Main course - Lamb - do not go past the lamb. Even if you don't like lamb, order the lamb. We went a la carte and loved it. The Marmalade pudding and Drambuie Custard is famous and rightly so. Have it. You won't regret it. Extensive wine list with half bottles - good value across all ranges.

Breakfast, black pudding and bacon. Tiny pots of salmon pate and toast triangles. Yum. Porridge with whiskey - yes whiskey - just do it!! While you're on Skye be sure to go past the Tallisker Distilery and do the tour. Thirteen hours driving for dinner, bed and breakfast, we prayed to be snowed in but alas made it home with full tummies and hearts. We would do it again in a heartbeat.

“Simply the best- what a haven of tranquility!”

Just returned from a two night anniversary stay and I wish it had been longer.
Please ignore all other previous negative comments, from beginning to end this place is a perfect escape. If you need to be entertained ,this is not for you,no distractions ,utter peace and quiet, the food is out of this world words fail me and there's plenty of it,the attention to detail ,the location- its is a very special place to enjoy - deep luxurious beds and bedding, soft large towels, bathrooms with deep baths and even candles with matches.
Take a good book and expandable waistline clothing and enjoy the exemplary service.
Worth every penny its not one of the cheapest places but the attention to detail is faultless!

“Still perfect”

This is the second time we have been here and there seems to be a need to get a few things straight. Some people have the strange idea that they should try to find fault with this place. Firstly I thought they must either have been somewhere else or that they had some personality defect. Then I felt sorry for them. They have missed out on feeling relaxed and that everything is OK with the world. Eventually I realised that they are the sort of people who can't interact with the staff to get the best result. If you haven't had the menu within 10 minutes and this upsets you then ask for it. As the advert says 'Simples'.
The attention is fantastic. From the moment of arrival we were made welcome. The tea and cake was just right. The room was spotless and we felt special.
The meal was excellent. The staff were attentive and made good suggestions. We were urged to try things we had never had before; they were good. The extra little bites were surprising and exciting. The food looked stunning and tasted even better. Time flowed by and there was no rush.
At the end of the meal we left the restaurant feeling that we had had an evening of entertainment; feeling full but not overfed.
This place is fantastic. Perhaps it is good that it gets no more awards, just leave it for those of us who think its is great. Those who want to criticise and nit pick should go somewhere else, preferably several hundred miles away, they just don't deserve what's on offer here. They should read Shirley Spears book, realise how crass they are and apologise to the staff for their comments.
Michael Smith's cooking is intelligent and witty with constant changes to adapt to what is available; with proper response to the seasons. This could only be done to this standard somewhere like Skye.

Room Tip: All of a very high standard.

“Wonderful hotel and the most beautiful setting in the world”

The restaurant here is outstanding - the best we have ever been to around the world - very fresh ingredients prepared to perfection. Very romantic setting. The rooms "over by" are very clean with amazing views - don't go thinking you're going to hotel du vin type of hotel - you'll be missing the point. This is a fantastic restaurant with rooms attached in a beautiful setting. The staff are attentive, and nice touches like home made scones and tablet when you arrive. Just go - you won't regret it.
