“Excellent meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

We dined here on the last night of our week-long stay on Mull and I have to say we both thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't stay overnight, so I can't comment about that.

I thought a previous user's comment of somewhat pretentious was a bit harsh (in our opinion), as we found the owners very friendly. It was very quiet that night, but the place was very relaxed and welcoming, certainly not posh or stuffy. It is expensive, no doubt about that, but given the location and the quality of food, I didn't mind that too much.

We would definitely return.

“somewhat pretentious.”

The guest house is in a nice location, but far too expensive for the service received . The room had nice views but was rather small with a disappointingly small bed. although it was spotlessly clean. Excellent dining room and breakfast was good but frugal. The evening meal food was good but a little more vegetables would have been welcome for £72 + £20 for wine for two people. The local pub had good food and a fish restaurant a couple of miles up the road was superb!

“A very comfortable hotel in a beautiful spot near beautiful beaches and sights.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

The service was pleasantly personal and thoughtful. We had a very comfortable ground floor bedroom with a good size ensuite with large shower with all amenities. The hotel was very clean and very comfortably and beautifully furnished.
It had an excellent dining room downstairs and a most comfortable lounge upstairs overlooking a small hill where one could watch wild deer grazing. Binoculars are left for guest use to see the wildlife. There is a 'library on the first floor with desk-games for use and a computer for free use. There are 5 other bedrooms.
There was adequate car parking space level with the front entrance accessed by a 50 yard sloping drive. It was a little tricky turning left out of the drive on the road, due to the width of the road and sightline.
There was a good choice for breakfast, well cooked. One felt the portions were slightly quantity controlled, but more was available if requested.
Set-meals were available in the evening, were well cooked and well presented. but one did not know what the menu was until one returned later in the day. Again you could ask in the morning and find out if it had been decided by then. We thought they were a little expensive for a set meal at £35 per head, excluding wine.
The location was excellent for visiting local and the Mull beauty spots.
There is a good private Mull Wildlife Tour Company 500 yards down the road and there are boat tours to Staffa nearby.

Room Tip: Ground floor room excellent - did not see others, believe they were good

“Excellent Hotel but Trying Too Hard at Dinner?”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

The hotel and breakfast couldn't be faulted. Residents' lounge on first floor give wonderful views over the surrounding countryside, large room, spotlessly clean but ...

... as we planned to be busy during the day, we felt that pre-booking dinner in the hotel would save a lot of hassle - which it did. Most of our 5 evenings, we were the only people having dinner. A minor issue was that the menu was set - no choices. Would have been nice to have been offered some choice, even if decision was required at breakfast. Didn't make much use of local sea-food specialities. Trying hard to be a French restaurant in the Scottish Islands - good but not quite good enough for price charged and too fussy. Cook obviously very talented but would perhaps do better focusing on more straightforward menus based around local ingredients?

“Great house with great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2010

This was a great guesthouse - clean, spacious and with welcoming and friendly hosts. Every morning breakfast was cooked to perfection - I highly recommend the 'luxury' porridge with a hint of whiskey and cream! Our room was clean and comfortable, and on our second day we were surprised with a plate of homemade cake left for us in our tea-tray! The bathroom was large with showering products available for you to use, and had plenty of towels. I liked the fact the house had a study, as well as a lounge with a DVD collection, should the weather prove a bit too much. This was a considerate touch in my opinion, as not many places think about what you might do if it rains. There was also a lot of information available throughout the house on Mull and things to do in the area.

Tripadvisor's description is a bit misleading here as Killoran House is actualy about a 20 minute drive from Tobermory, and is closer to the village of Dervaig, which is a five minute drive away.
