“Disapointing stay at The Govans”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

My wife and I are reluctant reviewers but on this occasion, we thought that we should complete a review.

the Govans is an older style B&B, located at the top of the town, with a very steep climb from the front and is only really suited to peoplewith their own transport.

The house is difficult to find as there is no sign referring to The Govans directing you to the house and it is down a little lane opposite a B&B called Little Erray that is registered with the Tourist Board.

The govans is not registered with the Tourist Board and in future , we will only book with registered properties as the Board is responsibler for ensuring that appropriate standards are met..

The accomodation at The Governs is two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, with their own outer door, which are attached to the house by an intertnal door. Access is somewhat demanding as you climb slightly awkward steps and a path that leads to the outer door.

The rooms are dark as they face a bank only about a yard from the window so light is restricted. The rooms are small and there is no room for a chair.

Colin and Gill run the business but as Gill works, Colin effectively looks after things.

Our main concern was that during our five day stay, the room was neither tidied or the beds made, as I understand from the Local Tourist Board is the normal practice with B&B Accomodation and it felt a little that the property was a little neglected.

Having expressed reservations about the property, the breakfasts were good and Colin and Gill were always very helpful throughout our stay.

“Booked over a month in advance, turned up to find we had nowhere to stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2009

Firstly I want to say that I have received an e-mail apologising for the mistake which sounds very genuine and the people do sound lovely. However, My wife and I were stuck in such a terrible predicament I feel I have to write a review.

I had booked over a month ( I want to give the benefit of the doubt but it may have been closer to 2 or 3) in advance and had received a pleasant confirmation. However, after a long days wildlife tour we turned up on our motorbike at about 7pm. This in itself was quite difficult as we had a job to find the place, but that was our own fault for not having tomtom which we discovered would have taken us straight there.

I had tried to ring but there was no answer and when we arrived the place looked deserted. again no answer from the phone and by this point We were being eaten alive by the midges. Shortly a couple arrived with kids and it turned out that they appeared to have the only rooms in the house and that the owners had gone out for the night.

It seems our booking had got lost and they had taken another booking instead, which left us sitting on a curb in Tobermory after discovering everywhere was fully booked at 8pm at night. I even had my folks at home searchng the internet for places all over Mull to discover nowhere had space!

It looked like we would be sleeping beside the bike until we discovered a little place hidden away on the seafront which wont take bookings and so had a room free for £30. Had it not been for this we would have been homeless for the night (or spent an extra £100 plus £50 EACH for dinner to stay at the only other place available on the island which there was no way we could afford).

So while I know it was a genune mistake, bearing in mind the consequences it could leave someone in I had to let others know.

“Fun In Mull”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2008

I have recently returned from a short break on the Isle of Mull. The island is a wondeful place for wildlife and bird watching. The Govans bed and breakfast was a delightful place to stay with a very homely atmosphere. The owners, Gill and Colin were very helpful with information on what to see and where to go, and I was blessed with some lovely sunny weather. The breakfasts were a veritable feast, that kept me going easily till lunch time. The rooms have a cosy ambience with pretty patchwork quilts. All in all a very nice comfortable stay and I hope to be able to return again next year.

“OK-ish!”

I have to say that this little B&B was a bit of a let down.

The people are lovely, friendly and helpful with lots of local knowledge, and you do get your own wing to the house which makes it feel very private and you can go in and out as you like without disturbing anyone, which is a big bonus....

However, I feel a bit guilty about pointing a couple of things out, but to be honest it seemed very damp and had that damp smell and something of an 'old-peoples' smell about it. the decor is somewhat dated and although it was very reasonably priced, it wasnt to our taste. We didnt expect luxury, but.....
sorry!

  • Liked — your own separate annex
  • Disliked — it felt damp (although it did rain constantly)
