“Booked over a month in advance, turned up to find we had nowhere to stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2009

Firstly I want to say that I have received an e-mail apologising for the mistake which sounds very genuine and the people do sound lovely. However, My wife and I were stuck in such a terrible predicament I feel I have to write a review.

I had booked over a month ( I want to give the benefit of the doubt but it may have been closer to 2 or 3) in advance and had received a pleasant confirmation. However, after a long days wildlife tour we turned up on our motorbike at about 7pm. This in itself was quite difficult as we had a job to find the place, but that was our own fault for not having tomtom which we discovered would have taken us straight there.

I had tried to ring but there was no answer and when we arrived the place looked deserted. again no answer from the phone and by this point We were being eaten alive by the midges. Shortly a couple arrived with kids and it turned out that they appeared to have the only rooms in the house and that the owners had gone out for the night.

It seems our booking had got lost and they had taken another booking instead, which left us sitting on a curb in Tobermory after discovering everywhere was fully booked at 8pm at night. I even had my folks at home searchng the internet for places all over Mull to discover nowhere had space!

It looked like we would be sleeping beside the bike until we discovered a little place hidden away on the seafront which wont take bookings and so had a room free for £30. Had it not been for this we would have been homeless for the night (or spent an extra £100 plus £50 EACH for dinner to stay at the only other place available on the island which there was no way we could afford).

So while I know it was a genune mistake, bearing in mind the consequences it could leave someone in I had to let others know.

“Fun In Mull”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2008

I have recently returned from a short break on the Isle of Mull. The island is a wondeful place for wildlife and bird watching. The Govans bed and breakfast was a delightful place to stay with a very homely atmosphere. The owners, Gill and Colin were very helpful with information on what to see and where to go, and I was blessed with some lovely sunny weather. The breakfasts were a veritable feast, that kept me going easily till lunch time. The rooms have a cosy ambience with pretty patchwork quilts. All in all a very nice comfortable stay and I hope to be able to return again next year.

“OK-ish!”

I have to say that this little B&B was a bit of a let down.

The people are lovely, friendly and helpful with lots of local knowledge, and you do get your own wing to the house which makes it feel very private and you can go in and out as you like without disturbing anyone, which is a big bonus....

However, I feel a bit guilty about pointing a couple of things out, but to be honest it seemed very damp and had that damp smell and something of an 'old-peoples' smell about it. the decor is somewhat dated and although it was very reasonably priced, it wasnt to our taste. We didnt expect luxury, but.....
sorry!

  • Liked — your own separate annex
  • Disliked — it felt damp (although it did rain constantly)

“Home Comfort on Mull”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2007

The Govans, Colin, Gill, and 12 yo son Dexter, run the kind of small, homey B&B that is fast disappearing from the traveler's world. They have two rooms (with shared bath) in a separately accessed wing of their cottage home. This is like staying with friends or family. There's no pretense, Laura Ashley hasn't been in charge of decoration, but you are invited to share the Govan's hospitality, their living room, and their experience in helping make your visit to Mull a most pleasant one. Bonus: Colin is a gourmet cook and will be happy to prepare an eat-in dinner for you with some advance notice. We feasted on cod-roe appetizer, venison pie, pear tart & local ice cream the night we stayed in, and it was one of the best meals on our month's trip to Scotland and Ireland. Nice folks on a spectacular island, and within walking distance of town (Tobermory), if you don't mind the rather stiff climb.

  • Liked — The warm family atmosphere
  • Disliked — For us it was all enjoyable, some might quibble with the steep walk into town.

“Very enjoyable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2006

Had a very enjoyable stay in this B & B. There is a very friendly family atmosphere that makes you feel most welcome, the owners are very helpful, recommending things to do, places to see, and where and where not to eat.

The rooms were adequate, nothing fancy but not too basic!

In a good location, we struggled to find it at first but it's in close vicinity to the main street in Tobermory, handy for everywhere in Tobermory!

  • Liked — Friendly atmosphere
  • Disliked — Rooms perhaps a little basic
