Arle Lodge is rather a unique expeirience in that it combines B&B with self catering; it is a self service continental breakfast of cereals and bread for toast, jams etc...but the owners arn't busying around like they normally do, as they don't even live in the same property, they reside next door so basically you are left to your own devices, sharing with everyone else who stays the same time as you, the cooking facilities, fridges, oven & crockery etc...you even do your own washing up! I stayed in February and i was the only one in the whole building, so i had the free run of everything which was great; to be honest, i'm not sure i would like it as much if there were other people here, having to work around people to make your food etc.. but thats just me. This accommodation would ideally be suited to groups of people i.e research teams or outward bound organisations or even large family get togethers, where everyone would know everyone else, then, it would be something very special indeed. The location is ideally situated not far from the craignure ferry and not far from the main town of Tobermory; it commands an elevated position overlooking the sound of mull (strip of sea between mainland and Mull) beautiful views, it also has a great garden area for barbeques in the summer.
The rooms are basic but sufficient, some have twin beds and en-suites; my room was freezing cold when it was shown to me, i had to turn on the radiator to warm it up a little, ok i know it was minus 3 outside but i would have thought the owners could have put the heating on prior my arrival; the rooms have no TV, which could be a bit tough if you didn't want to watch what other guests were watching in the main lounge area.
I found this accommodation difficult to rate, but gave it four stars because of its potential with groups of people who know each other. Almost forgot to mantion the free WiFi which is how i'm writing this review.
