“Tobermory Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

This hotel is a favourite of ours and when I read some of the other reviews, I can't believe the people have stayed at the same place. Who goes to a beautiful location like Mull to sit in their room? Yet that is all some of the people who write seem to want to do. The Tobermory Hotel is converted from a terrace of traditional fishermen's cottages. It is this authenticity which is a large part of its appeal. It sits right on the Harbour front and the views are unrivalled. The hotel is lovely and completely individual; every room is different and each is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The breakfasts are superb - Scottish hospitality at its best - and we have always found the staff very friendly and willing to accommodate individual requests, including early starts. The restaurant food is wonderful - a real treat. The only disappointment will be if you don't book early enough to secure a table.

Room Tip: All the rooms are comfortable but the ones facing the harbour are particularly picturesque.

“Lovely base for walking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

This hotel really is a lovely place. The staff are local people who are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable which makes it a great base for walking, whether you are just having a saunter round the harbour - charming place - or getting your boots on and heading out towards Dervaig - great views. There is a breeding population of sea eagles on Mull and if you are really lucky you might catch a glimpse of one if you walk out over uninhabited areas.
The food at the hotel is superb - it is worth staying there for the breakfasts alone!
The rooms are clean and the hot water really is hot.
A couple of years ago I stayed in a big chain hotel in York which was £75 a night then. The bed there was bigger than that at the Tobermory Hotel but otherwise the York one was inferior in every way to the Tobermory Hotel which is more comfortable and welcoming and generally nicer than you would normally expect on a fairly small island.

“Old, musty, noisy and overpriced”

We paid more than 100 Euro a night for a room in this hotel on a weekend trip to the Isle of Mull. Here is what we got for that: A room (#2) so small that one person had to sit on the bed while the other person was moving in the room. The room opens to a dirty, stinky backyard. We hardly got any sleep as the stairs of the hotel were squeaking every time someone came or left the hotel. Alternatively, we could listen to entire conversations in the room next door. On top of that, the fire alarm went off three times during the night. In the morning, we found the reason for that as a note in the bathroom asked you to close the door so that the steam of the shower doesn't trigger the fire alarm. I understand that old buildings have their own charm and might be not as convenient as new buildings - but to run a hotel in an old building is no lame excuse for poor maintainance. I must admit though that the breakfast after a terrible night was absolutely terrific. We only chose this hotel because everywhere else the rooms were booked. I recommend to book early if you want to stay overnight on Mull - and better somewhere else.

“Great Hotel - location - staff - food.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Had to separate the hotels restaurant " The Waters Edge " (see separate review) which is really 5 * from the hotel which is situated in an ancient fishermans cottage right on the harbour front.

Hotel is well managed, friendly and efficient staff. Small rooms, which is only to be expected considering the age of the building.

I was having some difficulty in accessing the free wi-fi whilst sitting in lounge, a staff member (subsequently found out was the owner) sensing my frustration, suddenly produced an attachment for me to plug in to gain access - without asking - thankyou.

Breakfast is up to the hotel's restaurant standard - a number of choices including Scottish traditionals.

Highly recommended!

(need to book for restaurant)

Room Tip: Request room with harbour views!!

“Nice Location shame about the Room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

Disappointed with the Hotel after the reviews - Arrived and found no heating on? Our particular room overlooking the Harbour wasn't very comfortable and had a musty smell. We didn't complain because we got the impression the hotel was full. The Staff were friendly and attentive and the food was good but the decor looked tired and dated (carpet worn in places) and because of the lack of heating in the public areas the first couple of days we were there it didn't feel cosy.
We didn't feel it was good value for money for the accommodation offered. Its only saving grace for us was the location....
