“Fantastic Hotel”

The moment we arrived we were greeted with smiles and a pot of tea. We were offered another room due to our height and the size of the bed in the room we booked.
Food was of the highest quality, definately have an evening meal at the hotel.
David and Jo were excellent hosts, offering help and advice when needed.
The room was lovely and warm and cozy with lots of character !
If you are going to visit Mull then this is definately the place to stay !

“Highland Cottage Heaven”

Tremendously warm welcome from Jo and David who were excellent hosts and we certainly appreciated the offered pot of tea served in the lounge on our arrival. Jo's cooking was fantastic (believe me I am fussy as we live near several Michelin starred restaurants) and special requests were not viewed as being a problem. Luscious breakfasts and delicious dinners more than made up for the strange mix of tunes as background music. The after dinner coffee and tablet was excellent ("HammyHants" - if there was a slip up that meant that your tablet was overlooked, why on earth didn't you mention it?)
If you are looking for a spacious bedroom or large en suite then perhaps this isn't the place for you. However, consider that Mull is the place for an outside holiday and you won't be spending all that much time lounging around your accommodation. Also there is a very comfortable residents' lounge with honesty bar which, when we were there, was used only by ourselves. The Highland Cottage is such a nice place to stay that the dinky rooms will be unlikely to bother you at all.
Quality toiletries in the bathroom, fruit, fresh milk and the most delicious home made shortbread in the rooms.
The main street in Tobermory with specialist shops is only a few minutes walk away although the steep climb back up the hill will take a wee bit longer!
Good value for money.
We will definitely stay at Highland Cottage again and again!

Room Tip: The Highland Cottage has a preponderance of four poster beds if that floats your boat. Not our tast...

“Brilliant!”

We stayed for 3 nights, it wasn't enough. David and Jo are brilliant hosts and they have created a wonderful haven of peace and comfort. We had dinner on our first night and ate well. Local ingredients, thoughtfully presented and beautifully cooked by Jo. She also does a mean cooked breakfast too! Both David and Jo are mines of information for things to see and do around the island. It will not be the one and only time we visit this wonderful little hotel and amazing island, can't wait to go back.

“Unique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

The friendly welcome and attention to detail is amazing. So often missed from the British hospitality industry. Coupled with food and wine of the highest standard, this is an experience not to be missed

Room Tip: Ulva the best if you want view of bay

“Quite nice food but vastly overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

We had dinner in Highland Cottage. The food was good and well-cooked but not exceptional.

The surroundings left something to be desired, in our view. The dining room has no windows, is crammed with an unusual collection of brick-a-brack and tables are adorned with plastic flowers. Scottish music provides the background noise which although a bit corny is slightly welcome because the size of the room and small number of diners means that all conversation becomes public.

Pre-dinner drinks are served in the "lounge" - an offshoot of the dining room with views of the garden wall and also crammed with brick-a-brack.

The coffee was just brownish hot water and unpalatable. And, although the menu promised us tablet with the coffee, no tablet appeared.

Overall, this was a disappointing eating experience. Quite nice food but not what you might expect given some reviews and the numerous awards.

The cost (including wine, pre- and post-dinner drinks and service) was a stonking £80 per head; about what you might expect to pay in a good restaurant with professional cooking and service and a pleasing environment.
