“good location but”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2011

We stayed here for four nights in July while attending the Hebridean Celtic Festival. We had a large twin room with ensuite bathroom, which, though it faced onto a road was quite quiet, so good night sleep was not a problem. Both the room and the bathroom could have been cleaned to a higher standard. We were a little disappointed in the car parking arrangements, because we were led to expect that there was private parking. The parking is actually the public car park just across the road. Happily this was free, but during the weekend of the festival we did not move our car for fear of being unable to get back in. Breakfast was okay though late risers shared space with paying customers, which felt a little odd. The location was excellent.
My problems with the Thorlee were with the payment. I secured the room by credit card on an online booking, I paid for the room at the end of our stay by debit card. Fine, or so I thought. Tthe money was duly taken from my debit card but then credited back to me twice- when I rang up about this the manager told me that he had mistakenly given the money to me but meant to refund another customer. I then found that my credit card had also been debited for the full amount and that this had happened on the second day of stay. While all of these matters were amicably resolved quickly, I was left with a very strong impression that they needed to develop some business skills. I have been assured that new systems are now in place to prevent customers being charged twice, I hope that other people have a better experience. Rose

“Nice room but noisey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011 via mobile

Perfectly decent place - we had a good large light room with nice high ceilings and it's a food central location in Stornoway. Breakfast was in a slight 1970s diner timewarp, but otherwise ok. Main problem for us was the noise of the room - it is directly over the main harbour road and despite double glazing the room was still very noisey - definitely worth asking for one at the back if you are noise sensitive (or heading elsewhere - the County House Hotel nearby Lionel nice from the outside at least and is set back a street it two.) Curtains also very thin so not good for the light sensitive either! But bottom line seems to be that there are no particularly special hotels in Stornoway, so though unexceptional I suspect you're as well off here as elsewhere if noise isn't a problem.

“Absolutely dreadful!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2011

Most overpriced uncomfortable room we've stayed in. For £85 per night we did not expect what we got. No basics like shower wash, the heating was turned off until evening, the room smelled badly of the cooking fat from the cafe downstairs all day, we had to keep the extractor fan on in the bathroom constantly to try and get rid of it, the bed felt like a pebbled board, the window even when closed sounded like it was open - trying to block out the sound of a venting system! There was one chair and no table, breakfast eggs were cold and partners cooked breakfast was not good! , no staff on in the evening. We asked for a quiet room facing away from main road - as this place fronts the main road, think they gave us a basement room! If you are going to charge £85 per night for a room it needs to be WAY above the quality we experienced. Going in our book as one of the worse in the highlands I'm afraid.

“Fantastic Highland Hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2011

Looked a bit dodgy from the outside but inside the rooms were beautiful large and bright with a lovely view over the harbour and five star faciities such asa flat screen telly and a dock for your ipod. Lovely soft towels and chockolates on arrival was a nice touch.
The host was the spitting image of Rene from Allo Allo a lovely man full of cheer as were all the staff and so helpfull. I would reccomend this hotel to anyone and have no hesitation in returning.

Room Tip: Room was noisey even with the window shut.

“Nice - But expensive.. but they all are up there!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 April 2011

Pleasant guest house right on the harbour front above a coffee shop.

The coffee shop also doubles as your breakfast room in the morning.

On arrival your keys are left in an envelope in the hallway. There is a small camera on the reception desk to monitor people going in and out.

Room was nicely finished and en suite. Nice bed, decent furniture and comfortable. The ensuite was also to a decent standard. Could get a little noisy outside however esp on a friday or saturday night as the pubs in town do get busy!

There is no service for breakfast on a sunday in keeping with the rules of the island in that sunday is a day of rest. However a nice BLT was left in the room the night before meaning that you could have breakfast wheny you woke at your leisure.

The guest house has no specific parking although there is a large town carpark by the ferry terminal on the other side of the road and there are no real parking restrictions on the surrounding streets.

We were up there visiting family so didn't spend too much time in the hotel and it seemed popular with tourists staying for a couple of nights to see the island.

I would recommend, although is expensive... but then again all of the accommodation is on the island so whilst it is nice I wouldn't class it as value for money. After all, you could have a week abroad in a nice hotel for similar money but thats besides the point I guess.

I would stay here again.
