I stopped here in November 2011 and have to say I was very disappointed. First impressions from the reception area showed a tired hotel in need of refurbishment, but worse was to come. I'd been given a room facing the rear of the hotel, presumably the view would have been so shocking I was spared it by the window being fitted with a frosted pattern glass, this made the shabbily decorated room very dingy and unwelcoming.
I was completely under whelmed with my wood chip wallpaper and ancient portable TV, a TV so old that it didn't have a remote control. It bore the name of the manufacturer..."Baird" ..... I'm sure Mr John Logie Baird himself made it in his early experiments all those years ago.
Evening meal was a carvery, I was given a generous helping of lovely tender beef but when I walked along the hot plates the disappointment in the poor selection of vegetables to accompany it was only exceeded by their quality. They were dried and baked onto the serving platters, so dry and crisp they resembled patterns on glazed plates… but patterns would have been easier to scrape off, and may well have been more appetising.
Night time wasn't much better, I drew the curtains and settled down into my little shrine to a bygone age.. ( I didn't think you could get hotel rooms like this anymore.) and spent a night listening to the constant hum of the central heating pump next door.. it didn't keep me awake.. the cold bedroom did that, my duvet was so small that each turn I made during the night exposed me to the chill air and woke me up. At least then I could listen again to the sound of the heating pump next door keeping the other rooms warm and dream of how nice it would be if my room was included.
Next morning I was looking forward to a hot shower, well that was going to be another dream of what I wouldn’t have, since the bathroom was exactly that.. bath only.
There are some good points for the hotel, it is very well located close to the ferry port and the gateway to the 21st century. Also the staff there are very friendly.
So if you are going to book a hotel in Stornoway, find a different one from the Caladh, but if have to stay here get a room on the front and hope that the heating works in it.
Room Tip: Get a room on the front, with clear glass.
