“Outstanding customer service which makes up for minor misgivings”

Attentive and friendly staff are hard to come by in the service industry nowadays but not here, the staff in this hotel were outstanding, always willing to help. The hotel itself is close to the standard you would expect from a Marriott or Hilton although the carpets and some decor are showing their age somewhat but this is easily overlooked. A large free car park and free wifi throughout the hotel and function areas is the icing on the cake. A well serviced breakfast in the restaurant is worth looking forward to in the morning again with helpful attentive staff, with a good choice of hot and cold items. I'm a regular Marriott customer and this just about ticks all the boxes for me. I can't help but think this hotel would get 4 stars in other areas of Scotland.

“Decent hotel, friendly staff, good food, and free WiFi!”

Stayed here for business as it offered free wifi which is really important to me. Upon arrival was told that I cannot check in until 2pm and the receptionist did not even check to see if the room was ready - which I thought they could have checked for me.
Decided to have some lunch in the restaurant and was pleasently surprised by the quality of the food. Checked in at 2pm and all was fine. Sure the hotel needs a lick of paint, but the staff are very friendly, in fact the receptionist informed me of several ways of getting cheaper rates the next time I used the hotel - this time I could not because I had booked through booking.com (note - if you are working with the NHS, this could also bring the room rate down)
The breakfast was good and the waitress very friendly and eager to help. I did think to myself that in some places on the mainshore the hotel might be graded as a 3+ or 4 star hotel.

“Dated decor and unhelpful reception”

Our first impressions were not great, as at 1.30pm we turned up directly from a ferry journey from the main land to be told that the booking in time was 2pm. No attempt was made to check if the room was actually available - we had to go and sit in our car in the car park for 30 mins! Peeling wallpaper on stairways, chipped paint everywhere, threadbare carpets, 3 tin pots on the floor to collect rain water leaking through ceiling in the area in front of the lifts on the second floor. Rooms tired and dated, especially the bathroom, which was a real 80s throwback. Breakfast was good quality, with plenty of choice.

“very good!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 August 2011

The reception staff were friendly and helpful. Even though we were with a coach party the food was excellent thoughout, the tables were nicely decorated and the restaurant staff were very good. In addition the bedroom was clean and comfortable-with a large bed!

“Never judge a book by its cover”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

The hotel might not look much as you drive into the carpark, but the warmth and friendliness of the staff and the quaintness of the hotel interior decor makes it the best place to stay in Stornaway. We were there on a quiet weekend and had the run of the place to ourselves. Our compliments to James and his staff for a relaxing and ejoyable stay.
