“Love this place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 May 2012 via mobile

We have stayed in this hotel several times in the past. In the past few years we have camped at Dal Mor and drop in to Doune Braes every early evening for a drink. We receive the warmest welcome every time from Eileen and the local folk. We love this hotel and it's location. And we love Mack!

“Where else are you going to go? (food only)”

I (we) ate here 2 nights in a row when we were working in the area.

The food was perfectly decent and the staff nice and friendly. I had the lasagne 1 night - and while it was almost definitely zapped in a microwave, it was very tasty - I would have been very surprised if it had been made fresh to be honest.

Fish and chips the second night was also quite tasty. I don't have any complaints but also I wouldn't go out of my way to return.

However, if you're in the area and looking for food, you're pretty much out of options anyway - From my experience eating here would certainly beat driving half an hour to stornoway on an empty belly!

My final experience was on our third day (a friday) when we found that the chef leaves at 9pm - so don't expect to eat anything after this. Admittedly this is not a shortcoming of theirs, - just bad planning on our part.

“Excellent Base in West Lewis”

I stayed here for several nights while exploring west and north Lewis and found it a welcoming, warm and comfortable base in every respect. My single room was small and slightly dated, but very comfortable. The wifi worked well. The owner and staff are extraordinarily warm and informative. I am a bit surprised by some of the commentary about the food, since much to my initial surprise, it was uniformly excellent and not very expensive for the quality and portions. My first night I had a pork loin which was outstanding. Breakfasts were also excellent. Possibly they have recently revamped the kitchen? This is not a luxury boutque inn, and that is reflected in the very competitive rates. It is a simple but supremely comfortable hotel in a very remote part of Scotland that actually surprised me positively. I did just write "remote" but it is also midway between the Carloway Broch and the Callanish Standing Stones, two of Britain's premier prehistoric sites.

“A Nice Place without being Inspiring”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We stayed one night at the Doune Braes. First impressions outside were poor as the parking area was a bit shabby and uncared for. The welcome however was warm enough and our room was okay albeit a little bit basic. We ate in the bar/restaurant during the evening and the waitress was more interested in talking to friends at another table than looking after our requirements. The food was fine without being memorable. Breakfasts were much the same. We went into the adjoining bar in the evening but the locals appeared to think our presence was an intrusion into their space. There was a lot of bad language......... when they spoke English, but most of it was Gaelic so it didn't really bother us. There was quite a bit of noise when the bar was closing.

“excellent. would recommend it to anyone and everyone.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

I have stayed at this hotel many times and would not go anywhere on the whole of Lewis at any price. The staff are excellent, the food is superb and if you want looking after in a 5 star manner without paying 5 star prices then try this hotel for size.
