We stayed one night at the Doune Braes. First impressions outside were poor as the parking area was a bit shabby and uncared for. The welcome however was warm enough and our room was okay albeit a little bit basic. We ate in the bar/restaurant during the evening and the waitress was more interested in talking to friends at another table than looking after our requirements. The food was fine without being memorable. Breakfasts were much the same. We went into the adjoining bar in the evening but the locals appeared to think our presence was an intrusion into their space. There was a lot of bad language......... when they spoke English, but most of it was Gaelic so it didn't really bother us. There was quite a bit of noise when the bar was closing.

I have stayed at this hotel many times and would not go anywhere on the whole of Lewis at any price. The staff are excellent, the food is superb and if you want looking after in a 5 star manner without paying 5 star prices then try this hotel for size.

Rude man in hotel bar who was extremeley drunk and abusive to fellow friends. Bar closed at 11pm even though we were guests in hotel. Staff friendly but desperate to close bar asap.Evening meals not that great however breakfast was good which made up for it. Service in restaurant a bit slow.Rooms basic but clean and comfortable.

We stayed at Doune Braes because the Loch Roag B&B at Breasclete that we'd booked into wasn't at all what we had expected (being polite!). The room was okay but was a loft one with sloping roof which didn't please The Boss, even though it was me who was in danger of hitting my head on the rafters in the middle of the night!

There is a comfortable bar (but NO decent ales - not even the locally brewed ones) and the restaurant is okay, although we did hear the "ping" of a microwave coming from the kitchen. Breakfast was also "okay" rather than good. My scrambled eggs were cooked in the aforementioned microwave and were like rubber. Actually Doune Braes is quite a nice place with lovely staff but does need to "try harder" as my school teacher always used to tell me!
