“Disappointed after seeing on the internet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

A rather tired hotel. A note in reception says "often not staffed" and this seemed to apply to most parts of the hotel. There were sufficient staff, but they seemed disorganized and often duplicated each others work, leaving other aspects struggling. The web site refers to fly fishing, but the hotel staff seemed to know nothing about this,

Room Tip: Above the hotel, not in the annex.

“Scottish hospitality with a gentle Hebridean touch”

I have returned to Doune Braes Hotel several times over the years. My accommodations have always been cozy, clean, and well-appointed with a complimentary hairdryer, extra blanket, soap, tissues, coffee, tea, etc. In addition, my occasional requests for extra amenities or even an special laundry run have been dealt with promptly and without fuss. It speaks volumes that owner Eileen Macdonald's core staff (Jessie, Mo, Sally and Angela) have all worked there for years and share her commitment to Island hospitality. Although I'm no "foodie," I do delight in their full Scottish breakfast each morning. The locally-made blood pudding is a must! Let's be clear: this hotel is a classic Scottish country hotel, NOT a Holiday Inn or a gourmet eatery with rooms in the back. It sits next to a quiet loch, home to several local ducks and geese, out in the middle of nowhere - yet close enough to the Callanish Stones for a quiet visit at sunrise.

“Where the hell did they find this chef?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2010

My review concerns the restaurant which we visited one evening in August 2010. We ordered two main courses .My wife going for a pork chop and I had a chicken pie in a pot. In other words a ladle of chicken soup with a layer of puff pastry placed on top of it. My wifes food was even worse, the pork chop being like boot leather. Someone needs to show this chef how to marinade meat! Theres no excuse for this lack of quality for the price. We did the usual English thing and didnt complain but vowed if this ever happend again we would refuse to eat adn pay and simply walk out citing the reasons given.

If we had had a good meal we would probably have ordered desserts.

We stayed here for one night, we were in the "annex" the room was adecent size but that's about all you could say about it. Decor very tired and in need of a good clean at £110 it was very expensive compared to other places we stayed which were much nicer in the outer hebrides.
