“A lovely little hideaway, with great food and amazing hospitality, defo go back...”
My wife and I went to Gallan Head for a wee break away from the kids, and for my wife's birthday. Lovely wee drive to the restaurant, passing through what has to be one of the most beautiful areas of the island...Uig is beautiful in the rain/sun/storm (delete as appropriate). Numerous beaches within minutes drive. Even the village you pass through to get to Gallan Head is quaint. It is reminiscent of a Cornwall village, not a Lewis one.
The restaurant has been adapted from the RAF buildings that were there previous, and it has been done very well considering the restrictions of the building as it once was. the walls are all solid concrete (obviously to avoid destruction during the war), so the owners have obviously done their best. The drab exterior has been well hidden behind the timber cladding, you would never have known it to be the same as the other buildings that are in the area. There is plenty of parking along the frontage.
The Restaurant is nice and bright, with a very comfy waiting area, the couches are very sleep-on-able (not that we did, but was close to it by the end of the evening). Nice decorations and paintings which are also for sale if you so wish. A well stocked bar and wine store which is on display for all to see. The dining area was nicely open and airy, even when busy (as it was) there was never the thought you were rubbing elbows with the other guests.
THE FOOD WAS AMAZING!!! I would come back purely for the food again, nevermind the get away feeling of having a night away. There were no long waits between courses, just enough time for a course to go down before being stuffed with the next one. Meals were cooked to perfection, and the amounts were very generous. I struggled to finish the dessert. Carolann was the consummate host, nothing was too much bother and she had friendly banter with all the guests. Poor girl must have been knackered by the end of the evening with all the walking to and fro from the kitchen. Met Andy (the owner) at the end of the evening where he and Carolann shared a glass of wine with us (at our insistence), he is a very sound bloke and very approachable.
Finally, the rooms. We had a very straightforward clean room, small but perfect for what we were looking for, quiet, clean and comfy. slept well knowing I wasn't going to be woken up by children. Again, although some may think the rooms are bleak and small...It is evident that Andy has done the best he can given the previous use of the building. The main thing in my eyes was it was clean and warm/comfy.
Defo be planning on going back....a lovely night away with lovely company....Thanks Gallan Head...
