The hostel has a friendly atmosphere and is clean. It's in a good location within Port Charlotte (although Port Charlotte itself isn't necessarily ideal for exploring Islay, as it isn't very central). The staff were very friendly and helpful.
Dining/kitchen facilities are good -- there is plenty of space to sit down and eat, and there are enough fridges and cookers. The common room is spacious and has comfortable chairs.
The bathrooms were clean although a little short of showers (3 in total for the whole hostel).
I would have appreciated free/cheap wi-fi, but I thought the wi-fi was expensive (£3 for an hour from memory).
The hotel next door has a bar that's open to visitors and has an amazing (if slightly expensive) range of Islay whiskies. There is traditional live music on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.
