“A stay at Kilmeny is reason enough to go to Islay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

Looking for accomodation on Islay I found a guesthouse, which The Scottish Tourist Board had found worthy of five stars! How can you believe it´s possible to find a five star guesthouse in the countryside on a remote island as Islay! How can it be true?
After having been welcomed by Margaret, after having had a delicious meal the first evening, a good night´s sleep and a full Scottish breakfast the following morning I can tell you. It can be true! If the rankings end at five stars I would suggest The Scottish Tourist Board to invent a sixth star, reserved for Kilmeny, and Kilmeny only.
I have never before seen, never before stayed at and never before heard of such a friendly place and professionally run in every single detail from the warm reception of every guest to the horn spoon for his porridge.
If you cannot stand birds, if you dislike whisky, if you hesitate before all the wilderness and beautiful sceneries of an open landscape. Then, if you will find no other reason to go to Islay, a stay at Kilmeny is reason enough, worth every penny and every effort to come!
Thank you, Margaret and Blair, hope to see you soon again!

Hello Hakan, to say that Blair and I are thrilled with your review is an understatement.
I think the whole family enjoyed your visit as much as you did, and we hope that your whisky book is well on it's way to the publishers. It 's very important to us that our guests are comfortable , and thank you for taking the time to write to tripadvisor and telling them that you were (and all the other lovely things you said.)
It is our wish that you'll come back to our lovely island , and we will have the pleasure of yuor company again.
With grateful thanks,
Margaret.

“An absolute delight - nothing quite like it”

My wife and I stayed here on the last leg of our honeymoon in Scotland. Staying at Kilmeny on Islay was the perfect way to conclude a wonderful holiday.

We actually made a booking at another B&B and there was a mixup - we were very fortunate to have found an alternative at Kilmeny. We were offered the suite, which was absolutely stunning. It is really evident that the proprietors have considered carefully every detail of these rooms, from the decor to the layout, furniture, fittings and furnishings. There is a personal touch in the suite which made us instantly feel welcome and comfortable. I can also say without doubt that it was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in (for someone with sleeping problems this was really a bonus!)...

Margaret & Blair were excellent hosts and were most helpful in all circumstances. We almost felt as though we were old friends who had come to stay for a few days. Breakfast was delicious - a wonderful selection of porridge, cereals, fruits, and cooked breakfast options as well.

What else? The setting is beautiful (as is most of Islay), and there is also a wind turbine which I regret I did not get the chance to inspect! I cannot think of any constructive criticism - they really have thought of everything at Kilmeny. I suppose if one did really not want to interact with other human beings while on holiday, you might want to request a smaller private table at breakfast. I usually don't talk to anyone before my second cup of coffee, but it was such a warm and inviting atmosphere at Kilmeny that I made an exception!

There is a difference between good customer service, and hosts who genuinely treat you as they would want to be treated themselves in such a setting. Kilmeny offers the latter.

Room Tip: We stayed in the suite which I believe is slightly more expensive - but absolutely worth it for the...

“Excellent B&B”

Kilmeny is in a lovely setting with extensive views. We were greeted by the charming and very solicitous Margaret, who offered us tea. We were booked into the Apricot Room, but were shown to the Gold, a spacious, long room with eaves and £10 more but worth the extra. It was immaculate, with lots of comfy chairs, a large bathroom with free-standing bath, separate shower, fluffy towels and lots of welcome toiletries, wall-in wardrobe, tea-making facilities with homemade biscuits, fridge, iron and ironing board, tourist info - even shoe cleaning materials. The super-king size bed was very comfortable. Only a slight niggle: if you are a light sleeper, you might hear the wind turbine, but at least they are making efforts to be eco-friendly. The full-Scottish breakfast, round a large table with other guests, was an impressive affair: home-made gingerbread, oatcakes and bread, piping hot good tea and coffee with cosies! We also had dinner one night (£36 pp, BYOB) which was also excellent. Margaret and Blair could not have been more welcoming. No credit card facilities so bring your cheque book.

Room Tip: Steep stairs to Apricot and Gold Room. The former is quite small and the latter might be less suita...

What a wonderful review you have left. I really want you to know how thrilled we are to have one such as that on our listings. I must have the best job in Britain…..welcoming all you lovely guests here to Kilmeny. It really is a pleasure, and then you go and leave me a glowing 5 star review, thank you.
I have to confess that the noise you heard whilst you were staying with us was our deep freeze, which backs onto the Gold room, whose condenser decided to go on the blink. We had to keep it going until the deepfreeze man from the mainland came to repair it, and I’m ashamed that it disturbed you during the night. The Gold room would be the only room to hear it, which I know is no excuse , but I’m glad to report that it is now silent running again. The windturbine is completely inaudible from the house …….that was a priority and a condition of the installation!
It’s not often that a five star review comes in with all the boxes ticked to 5 star , and I just want you to know that we all thought you were a 5 star guest too.
Best wishes from all the Kilmeny team,
Yours,
Margaret

Excellent from start to finish - There had been a slight mix-up with our booking but Margaret
bent over backward to get somewhere for my husband and myself to stay for 2 nights which she did and when we did arrive at Kilmeny we were given tea and cakes in the sitting room before being shown up to our room which was beyond our expectations, complete with a small decanter of whisky. Next morning at breakfast Margaret introduced us to the other guests as well as her husband Blair. The breakfast was a true Scottish breakfast and the dinner which Margaret cooks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings are an event in themselves. My husband and I enjoyed our stay on the island which my Gt Grandfather James T Christie founded the Islay Woollen Mill which is still going to this day.

Dear Lindsay and Robert,
Your kind review is greatly appreciated. It was such an uplifting experience to help you discover your grandfathers roots here on Islay, and it was a delight looking after such appreciative guest as you and Robert.
It was a pleasure to help you find somewhere for your first 2 nights when the travel agent failed to adjust your booking on your request. All's well that ends well. Next time miss out the agent , and book direct !
I hope your Mother was thrilled with all the photos you took, and that perhaps one day we may see you all here together.
Thank you again Lindsay for taking the time to write in. Your gracious kindness will be long remembered .
Yours,
Margaret

“Unrivaled bliss”

I wish there were 6 stars for the excellent food and service we experienced at the Kilmeny Guest House.

My wife and I stayed here in the midst of 2 weeks in Scotland. The people were lovely (both perfect owner Margaret and the other guests). Margaret and Blair are the nicest hosts you could meet, they really genuinely want you to love their home and the surroundings and have a great time. The many extra touches have been covered on all the other reviews and sometimes it's good to get a surprise when you experience something yourself.

To say we were spoiled would be an understatement. The rooms (we stayed at the pink room) are stunning and so well equipped and comfortable, we truly felt at home and pampered during our stay. The breakfasts were wonderful with the best choice we have ever had at any 5 star hotel and also was the dinner.

Relaxing, quiet, definitely worth the stop. Stay as long as you can!

The only problem now is that I've started to judge other places by this standard.
