“not at all as bad as trip advisor reviews made out”

Having read the reviews on TRIP ADVISOR was a little apprehensive but we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. We were warmly greeted by the staff and allocated our rooms which were maybe not of the highest standard but were clean and smelt fresh. Travelling in a group of eight consisting of four men and four women, the men were going out on the first night so the ladies decided to eat at the hotel which was a very good choice as the food was FANTASTIC it was that good that we ate there for all three nights that we stayed, breakfast was also of a high standard. On Thursday night there was a quiz in which the ladies took part and WON much to our surprise and the disgust of the locals. All in all we had a GREAT time and would definitely return.

“Established in 1812 says it all”

We stayed one night as a stop-over point between Scotland and Ireland. The town itself didn't have much to do, so we spent almost an entire day in the pub. The pub smells like a museum, musty and gross, but the atmosphere was okay and the staff was very nice. (The clothes I wore in the pub DID have to be isolated in plastic bags for the rest of my trip.)

To be fair, the previous reviews that griped about the dark hallways were a bit harsh. The lights are on a motion sensor so you have to be patient. Once they kick in it is very well lit. I suppose it is a good thing for the environment.....but a bit annoying.

I didn't find the room to be dingy like previous reviewers, but the bathroom left a bit to be desired. The floor felt spongy as if the tub had overflowed at some point and never dried properly.

The owners have done what they can with the property but lets face it, you can put new paint on an old building but it will always be an old building.

I read the reviews before booking, booked anyway, and regret it.

“Old Coach House with Bar”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2008

We were looking for a place in Troon with easy access to the train station and the ferry (we took rail from York England and needed a place to stay with access to the Troon - Larne ferry.) The Anchorage is about a 15 minute walk through the center of town and is directly across from the ferry terminal. The good stuff: the bar scene was lively and friendly. Didn't have dinner as the kitchen had just closed down (10 pm) so we took in a chippy place nearby. The not-so-good stuff: the room, although large and with a decent view of the harbor, felt run down and dingy. I made a mental note of where the fire exits were as the hallway was dark and somewhat foreboding. The breakfast, which was bundled into the price of the room, was your standard "Traditional Scottish Breakfast" fare but the staff was not particularly attentive as there was some foolish game show on the TV. In all, I would not be as harsh as others in my review, but this was not a great experience at all.

“Nice bar, awful room.”

Great bar, awful room!

Stayed one night last month on our way further north. The hotel is located in quite a nice place, within walking distance of Troon town centre. Our first impression when going through the door, was very good. Went and found somebody to check us in in the bar, which was very nice. Would have liked a room with a view, but all we got was roof tops! The room was badly in need of a refurb, had been hastily painted, white over green, which still showed through. There were two beds in the room, one double with a three quarter head board, and a single which wasnt long enough for an adult! We opted for the double bed, which had the most uncomfortable mattress, which bent in the middle! The bathroom was shabby, plastic footprints stuck on the bath bottom, which were all peeling off. The breakfast next morning was awful, it had been kept warm and was hard and dry. Not a good experience. The best part was the bar, had a lovely bar meal in there, although the staff were not very chatty.

  • Liked — The bar area had a good atmosphere and nice food.
  • Disliked — the bedroom was shabby and not good value. too expensive.
