“First & last visit”

Chose this hotel as my usual hotel in Shetland was fully booked.
I will not stay there again. Found staff to be aloof and unhelpful. Food and service very poor. Hotel is in a nice location so it is a pity that the staff do not go out of their way to make guests feel welcome. Certainly not good value for the money.

“A disappointment”

A disappointment... My room was tiny - this is Shetland, for goodness sake, they're hardly short of space. And noisy - I was always woken up before 6am by staff clattering around. Yes, the restaurant food (as distinct from the bar food) is lovely, but you have to book it before 5pm - ridiculous, especially considering that it's almost empty. In summary, don't waste your money here: I've stayed in many Shetland B&Bs and every single one was more luxurious than this poor hotel (and much cheaper too).

Really enjoyed my stay here. We were a group of 5 and the staff were excellent. Very welcoming and catered for all our needs. Nice freindly, homely approach to all of us. Thanks.

“Big disappointment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2005

We booked this hotel after hearing some good reviews particularly relating to the restaurant and given that we understood they raised much of their own produce / lamb etc we were really looking forward to our overnight here and especially the dinner.
It seems we were the only ones there that night and we definitely felt as though we were an imposition. The owner herself took care of us and it seemed there were no other staff on duty when we arrived and that evening it seemed only her and a cook were on duty.
Rooms were clean but definitley not four star. Beds were not particularly comfortable.
We freshened up and had drinks in the front parlor before dinner. The atmosphere was more like a funeral home and we felt compelled to whisper (to be fair we certainly didn't need to but it was just one of those places where it seemed appropriate!)
They seemed extremely anxious to take our order and get on with dinner and we constantly had to ask for a few more minutes to enjoy our drinks before ordering.
We were then shown into what can only be described as a very bland dining room which they have tried hard to make interesting with various bits and pieces from world travels but it doesn't work and they need a decorator! The choice of music through dinner was also very odd...60's love in for the most part which just doesn't work with dinner.
The food was not very good at all. Of four dishes ordered only one was good. One had to be sent back as was inedible and the other two were fair at best. This was really a disappointment.
I had understood they were famous for their lamb...this was one of the worst lamb dishes I ever had.
The menu is also unimaginative and almost everything is pan-fried.
At both meals we ate there had to ask for simple things like salt and pepper and bread and butter were severely rationed.
During the night there was a lot of banging of the front door of the hotel which was annoying.
At breakfast the next morning, as we ordered the owner muttered under her breath (but clear enough to be heard) "oh you are all having something different"! You have to specify two eggs..if you ask for "fried eggs", you get one. Also the order was not complete. They removed orange juice glasses the moment you drank the last drop as if they were afraid you might have a second glass.
It is also VERY quiet here and unless you are lucky enough to hit on one of the evenings when they apparently have local music it is difficult to find anything to while away the evening. The hotel is quite isolated but the road immediately outside is narrow and quite busy and not conducive to a stroll after dinner.
At check out we were informed they do not accept Amex. Then they said my Mastercard was declined which I found to be extremely surprising and when I tried it just a few minutes later elsewhere it went through quite easily and when I called the credit card to check this they said that there had been no decline on the card and seemed the hotel did not actually process this correctly. Luckily another in our party was able to use his card and pay an amount that was well in excess of what this hotel was worth.
I would agree with the previous report that staff were aloof here and food was poor.
An elderly member of our party stumbled down the stairs as were leaving and this was witnessed by a member of the staff but no-one seemed to care.
Perhaps it was because it was the end of the season but we definitely felt as tho we were imposing upon them by being there.
The owner was also visibly miffed that we had stayed at another hotel on the island the previous night - we were grateful we had since our one night here was extremely disappointing and absolutely not worth the money.

The room was neat and clean. The staff were aloof and the food in the resturant was terrible. If you are visiting Shetland. FInd somewhere else to stay.
