“Appalling food”

My wife and I had a meal here on Friday night 2nd Sept - in the bar as the restaurant was closed. We ordered salmon and smoked haddock when they arrived both were swimming in at least 3 millimetres of liquid - the fish wasn't bad but everything else was just awful. My advice is don't go and if you do don't order food!

“Unfortunately, only one thing to do with this hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

This hotel was chosen by our travel company because there were 26 in our archaeology group and Jarlshof site is next door. The hotel overlooks the sea and is on the southern tip of Shetland with seabirds and seals. Unfortunately it is also next door to the airport and suffered an expansion, presumably in the 1970s oil boom; judging by the poor quality it was for oil workers passing through. So an attractive Victorian country house was transformed into a badly built hotel.
The staff deserve better and struggled manfully to keep guests fed and comfortable.
The only answer to me seems to be to demolish the tat, revert to a small high class hotel by the sea, airport and Jarlshof and build about 10 - 15 properly designed and constructed bedrooms. I wish them well.

Room Tip: try to avoid the rear rooms facing the runway; nearly all do!

“Dreadful Service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2011

My wife and I tried to order drinks in the lounge bar just prior to 2pm. The waiter asked us to take a seat as he was just serving someone else. Despite several glances in our direction he ignored us for the next 10 minutes. (He was taking food orders which close at 2pm). Even after this he continued to ignore us. We called a waitress who said she would get back to us. Eventually, she returned and we ordered drinks. She made our hot drinks behind the bar. Then she put them on the bar counter where they remained as the waitress walked out of the lounge without bringing them to our table. At this point we decided we had had enough and left.

“The most dreadful hotel experience of my entire life!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I stayed as a member of a tour group which had 41 people. Everyone else was housed in the hotel but I was in the lodge that was variously described as 1.5 or 2.1 miles away!
I like to be able to come and go as I wish and not be dependent on a hotel pick up service. The first time I asked to be brought from the lodge I was told that there was no point as the Jarlhoff would soon close. I insisted and was collected five minutes later and spent 30 minutes at the still open historical site.
Later that night I was taken back to the lodge only to find that the door wouldn't open. I had to walk all the way back to the hotel and was drenched in a sudden downpour. Of course I was in my evening clothes with no waterproofs. It was pitch black and I was lost, soaking wet and thoroughly misserable . I had to get help at the airport.
The hotel staff told me the door wasn't locked (although one admitted the door was hard to open) I was up until 2.a.m. trying to dry my clothes, received no appology or compensation (i.e. a reduction in my tiny {£5} bar bill would have been something) and was told it wasn't the hotel's fault and I shouldn't criticise the staff.
The hotel deserves to be sued for traumatic stress. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT STAYING IN THIS DREADFUL UNCARING HOTEL!

Room Tip: Refuse to stay in the lodge

“Better than some Shetland hotels”

My impression was generally favourable especially for south Shetland. As an offshore worker I get to try more Shetland hotels than I would like.
We stayed at the external lodge
Room was basic but clean. Bed reasonably comfortable. Nothing fancy but OK
Food again nothing fancy but Ok and very reasonably priced.
Service was actually quite good and friendly. They were really busy but made me feel like a regular paying guest and welcome.
Lot of interesting historical sites within walking distance or short hop in the mini bus shuttle.
