“We loved this hotel and will be back”

This hotel was just what we wanted. The drive from Lerwick was easy and the roads clear. It's a great, well run but easygoing place with friendly locals and great food. The steaks were large and well cooked by the chef. Seafood fabulous.

We liked the large, newly decorated room. Everything in the hotel was clean and well ordered. I even walked into the kitchen by accident and it was spotless.

There is no lift but if you are upstairs the actual staircase was one of the few in a Shetland hotel that I could walk up with ease (I am disabled and walk with a stick).

The owners have a renovation project but it is low key and didn't intrude on our stay. The renovated rooms are sparkling, well furnished and everything, (including the beds) was new.

From the windows we could see the water and hear the bird song in the mornings. It was the peace and quiet that I loved here most of all. We are planning to return for a longer stay. This is a hotel that one can feel at home and relax in.

Room Tip: ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

“A visit to the Carvery”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 March 2011

Didn't stay here, but came for Sunday lunch.
Started with a really lovely mushroom soup and then the carvery: This is a good concept for an area that is not highly populated and people like plain good home cooking. The service was good to average, the food was well cooked and very tasty and the atmosphere was relaxing. We will be back!
For visitors thinking of staying, Paul and Andrea have clearly done a huge amount to renovate and upgrade what a few years back had become a relic of byegone days. Congratulations to them for their dedication.

“Brilliant!!!”

Having packed jumpers and jeans were thrilled to have to apply suncream due to fantastic weather! Our stay was topped by the lovely surroundings, accommodation and friendly staff at this establishment. Andrea, the owner, was even able to arrange transport for us from Sumburgh airport! The rooms were very clean and decorated to a high standard. The food was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff on duty at the time. Met alot of extremely friendly locals in the bar in the evenings, some of whom told us the best places to take our walks, and where best to view the amazing local wildlife. Already booked for another visit during October.

“By far the worst hotel I've ever seen”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 June 2010

The St Magnus Bay Hotel is without doubt the dirtiest and most dilapidated hotel I have ever seen. With an over powering smell of chip fat oil and empty beer cans interspersed with cigarette butts, it’s actually so bad it’s worth visiting just to see how terrible a place this is.
However, at £75 per night per person, avoid at all cost!

“So Faulty Towers it made it one of our best holidays ever”

First impression would make most people want to turn round and find somewhere else. Those that have missed one of the most beautiful places on earth. The hotel and it's owners and staff have a mountain to climb in these cash tight times. Their plan is to renovate this grade 2 listed building with their own cash while still trying maintaining a service to it's guests. Our host's could not be faulted in our eyes. They lent us their car, they cooked our catch from our fishing trip even their faithful dog Suzy looked after us while we walked around the headland and beaches just on the doorstep. I have never been on a 7 hour walk and seen so much wildlife in one place. I've edited my photo's of the day down to 350 ! We plan to visit again once the renovations have been completed as there is still lots we have to see
