“The BEST Fish pie ever?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

Last Monday 20th July, my wife and I revisited the Morangie House Hotel in Tain, Ross-Shire for lunch. I had the cream of Leek & Potato soup which was wickedly delicious. For main course we both chose the Fish Pie and i can honestly say it was probably the best I have ever eaten! It came in individual serving dishes, golden brown on top with piping hot luscious white sauce and perfectly cooked salmon, haddock and 4 plump prawns. We also had a side dish with new potatoes and al dente broccoli, carrots and mange tout which were again served hot and perfectly cooked. It seems the "new" owners have been battling to overcome the grave damage caused by the previous management of this hotel (large chain) and on the evidence of this visit plus a previous one in May when we had Haddock, chips and mushy peas , again faultlessly cooked and presented they are now on a winner! Visit and enjoy the food - you won't be disappointed.
P.S. My wife also cooks Fish Pie so have to be careful she doesn't read this or I could be in trouble.

“Didn't stay in hotel but previously fabulous restaurant was disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2010

We have used the restaurant in this hotel in the past. And the menus, meals and service were fantastic and great value for money.
However this time the hotel had changed hands since the previous private owners.
On arrival we found the grounds were poorly kept. The bar was a bit dreary, and the menu was very limited. The service was mediocre.
The food that we had though was good and plentiful and reasonable value for money, but we could have had the same in any restaurant really.

Another issue, we find common to most restaurants is the wine. Over priced and poor. This time we bought the most expensive wine with a write up that did not look as if it may be rough.(eg Spicy, Hints of oak etc) But it was cheap and rough at £20. A bottle of £3.50 Cotes du Rhone in Lidls for instance is far more pleasurable. Can you pay corkage these days?

We have responded directly to this review.

Again we feel reviews on this site seem very onesided and we completely disagree with these comments.

Ask the regular 100 plus customers who have Sunday Lunch.

Our Dinner menu has 15 plus choices backed up by a specials board with fresh local fish etc.

All pruduce is fresh and local and includes local mussels, lobster, crab and fish when available.

The steaks are all highland beef from the local butcher, best in the UK,in our opinion.

We have asked the reviewer to give us another try .

“What a disappointment!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2010

We Stayed here for one night on 4th June and what a disappointment! On arriving, the car park and grounds looked unkempt and uncared for. There was an old car abandoned in the car park with flat tyres and weeds growing around it - not a good look!
We were directed up the stairs to our room with no mention of a lift or offer of help with our luggage. We got to the room to find that the complimentary sherry was nowhere to be seen despite the fact that it is still being advertised on their website. The room was nice but badly let down by the fact that there was no valance on the bed and the base was clearly exposed showing ripped fabric which was heavily stained - disgusting! The service in the dining room left much to be desired with one of the staff leaning on the dresser looking decidedly bored. When they brought me the wrong starter and I pointed out the mistake, the waitress was nonplussed and asked if I was OK to have the wrong soup!! At checkout the bill was wrong and my husband had to bring it to their attention. It was nothing like we were led to believe from their website and we had the impression it was being run by a bunch of amateurs. It is a shame because it has such potential, but there is such a lack of care and attention. We wouldn't stay there again.

We have responded directly to this review.

There are a number of discrepancies in the review however we welcome all comment ,positive or negative.

We always follow up comments directly and have done so on this occaision.

We had 70 rotarians for dinner on the same night including some of rotaries leading lights.feedback from this group was extremely positive.

Booking.com and Late rooms reviews seem more balanced and it only seems to be this site
that attracts such,in our opinion ,heavily onesided views.

“fabulous accommodation with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. would highly recommend it to all!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2010

stayed here for two nights over the holiday weekend with family which included myself, teenage son, my mother, sister and elderly grandmother who has restricted mobility and requires to use a wheelchair. i must start by saying that the disabled access was great and made life much easier!! the rooms were very spacious, beds comfy and room very clean ( my son has asthma so believe me we know when they are not clean!). staff were very friendly and helpful, meeting our every requirement with ease. the location of the hotel is great as you can walk into the town within 5 minutes to which there are a few pubs, restaurants and cafes although we did not use any of these as the food in the hotel was excellent and the bar offered a wide variety of drinks at reasonable prices (one of the not so many places to stock 7 yr old havanna club which i must recommend to all rum drinkers of the world!). overall we all enjoyed our stay and would definately return to this hotel again.
