“What a wonderful place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 July 2011

We absolutely had to write something here about this fabulous place. The warmest reception we have ever received, wonderful home cooked hearty meals and immaculately kept rooms.
Despite a wee accident of our own making for which our very gracious hosts, Trudy and Kevin, forgave us.. we had such a lovely time there. The room was very clean and freshly decorated. Very spacious, with a wonderful view. The en-suite was a perfect size for us and again, imacculate and fresh. There was plenty of clothing space and room for all our luggage. The dining area was a delightful mix of homely feel, with book collections and ornaments combined with professional dining layout. There was a games room with bar too. We enjoyed a wonderful evening meal, met almost the whole family, who were just wonderful, including their pet cat and dog.. a real treat. We spent time chatting in the conservatory to them too, it was like visiting old friends.
The breakfast in the morning, was a real starter to the day and very well cooked. We were given lots of advice about travelling to Skye, which turned out to be spot on!
If you're staying in the area.. stay here!!

“A very enjoyable weekend!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2011

I was greeted by a very warm and friendly family, the room catered to all my needs and was very comfortable.
During my stay I had the evening meal, which I found, as well as the breakfast, very well cooked and presented. I found the price, for the accomodation and aminities quite reasonable for what was offered.
The surrounding area was idealic and very peaceful.
I will most definitely be staying there on my next visit.

“We Enjoyed it very much and would stay there again.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2011

My first trip to the Loch Ness area and i would say that it is a perfect base for exploring the area. The view from the room was stunning in itself. I found Auchterawe Country House very comfortable and relaxing after being out all day walking and sight seeing. The "Hodson" family made us feel very welcome and were most helpful with regards to things to do and routes to take to get there. Perfect if you enjoy the countryside and wildlife as their was plenty to see. I saw Otters at Kinloch Hourne along with Red Deer. Around the house were Sika Deer and Pine Martin's, though we never saw A Pine Martin while we were there.

A Most Enjoyable Stay

“Rudeness and terrible experience!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2011

It was the worst experience I had in a country house ever. My family and I travelled across the Scotland and the hospitality we received was worse than you could think of. I wish I could have read the reviews first and did not make the reservation.
Firsty we arrived at the house around 22.00 which we did not realise we were late. Our Sat Nav did not bring us to the place and we were lost. The roads in night time were too dark and we struggled to find it.

Finally when we arrived the house was in complete darkness and luckily the door was open and we were welcomed by girl who brought us to our room. She told us that we were late which we understood and apologised for the inconvenience. When we asked for the heating, she ignored us and finally said heating switched off and will be on early in the morning. We asked whether she can turn it on and she said she can not. The heating was not turned on in the morning either which was disappointing.

When we asked how the shower works she showed how it operates and while we were in the bathroom with my wife, two of our mothers and her, her father came in and she told her “ Go downstairs, it is late.” He was massively angry and he looked drunk to me as well. I was in a shock and did never experienced anything like this is my life. I felt sorry for the girl who did try to explain her father what she was explaining to us and the rest of it. He was very rude to her and to us. He did not even say hi to us and rudely said “ Did she explain breakfast is 08.00 in the morning” and made his way downstairs. I was totally in stress and our family trip to Scotland was ruined by a host and his family.

We did not have a good sleep and we were so scared of him. I was under the impression that he was drunk. I might be wrong but one thing I know I am right that he does not know anything about hospitality and how to treat people starting from his own daughter!!!

After he left, her daughter came to our room and apologized for what happened. I explained that his rudenesss was not welcomed by us and it caused so much stress that you don’t want in your holidays.

I also realised how many information posters they put around the corridors and on walls. One of them said “Please switch off lights after use” which I believe should not be on the guest house which has 4-5 bedrooms only. Other one said “ Due to high bank charges there will be a 2.5% charge for paying by credit card(3%charge for corperate cards). We apologise for any inconvenience caused.” I believe this is also completely unacceptable. None of the places we have stayed had this kind of signs all over the place. Also their dinner menu prices are way to expensive for a guest house.

When we woke in the morning we went to breakfast room and realised how dirty is the base table cloth. I attached the picture for you to look at well. By knowing that we were the only guests stayed in the house on that night I would expected them to provide us a clean table cloth but it wasn’t the case. We set and realised that the 3 cheap knifes we had on the table were very dirty and some of them had leftover eggs from the previous days. When we asked the same girl to change the cutlery she told us “ Will you pick up more mistakes we do” in a very rude manner. The cutlery were dirty and I was expected to get on and eat with it and it was totally unacceptable. We had a shock the day before and were treated once again with a familiar rude behaviour. I was very upset and waited till the breakfast finished. We were not even offered any apology.

After this horrible experience my wife and I made a decision to talk to the hosts. We were at the entrance and took a seat and I expected them to take a seat as well but they did not. When I said that it is very rude to talk to your guests while they are seating and you are standing they ignored us and told us “ It is our home and we can do whatever we want.” When we explained our experiences he said “Yesterday night you come late and if you could have informed us about your lateness everything could be different”. As far as we concerned we did not do anything wrong and we apologised by being late the day before. Appearantly the last check in time was 20.00 and we come 22.00. I explained his rudeness to his daughter was shocking and the way they treated us in a very short period of time was unpleasant and upsetting. I also explained about the breakfast cutleries, dirty table cloth and etc and he said “It is not a 4 star hotel”. After this comment I told him that I am not willing the pay the bill because of the entire experience and his wife gave us the charged slip which was £124 for two twin rooms.

We were not happy and yet we were charged the full price.

We stayed 7 days in Scotland and I wish I would not stayed at Auchterawe Country House and stayed somewhere else.

“Fantastic Get Away Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 May 2011

This is a fantastic house in the most outstanding setting. It's location is a couple of miles out of the village, which is great close enough if you want to pop down to the pub, but far enough away to get lots of peace and quite, which was what we were looking for. The rooms were on the large side, the level of decoration and cleanliness was to a very high standard. Tons of pressure and hot water in the shower. Food of a good standard and plenty of it. The family were all very friendly and helpfull. We had a great stay and highly recommend a visit. We will be back.

Room Tip: All rooms with great views.
