“Understated luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

Perched on the north west corner of the country is a real treat, our home from home which we used as a base from which to explore amazing beaches, nearby lochs and the imposing mountain landscapes.

MacKay’s is not a 'traditional hotel' so if you turn up expecting 24 hour room service, a capacious dining room and an endless culinary selection for dinner then you will be disappointed. If on the other hand you are looking for accommodation that offers style, comfort and honest unpretentious cuisine then you will not be disappointed.

MacKay’s really is an oasis within an oasis and it puts many more expensive establishments to shame, a feat made even more remarkable when you consider where it is located!

“Beautiful location, very comfortable room, excellent meal.”

We stayed here for 2 nights and had a large airy room located to the rear of the property.
We could hear some noises in our room, from the kitchen/preparation area below, but nothing to worry about. No stunning views from our room - we could see the sea, but had to look past the local amenities block to do so, and the other direction was up to the laundry area.
No big deal really - we didn't come to spend time in our room, which was large and had a couch. The bathroom was good. The biscuits were very welcome.
We had dinner here one on night (talk about fresh seafood!) and the food and wine was excellent. Eat here!
Note there is no parking directly on site (you can park in front to load/unload) but there is a large safe car park directly (less than 10ms) across the road - car safety is not an issue in this part of the world.
I would definetly recommend Mackays - the staff are great, as is the ambience, and the location is perfect.
The guest lounge with the open fireplace to access during the day was just another good point to note.

Room Tip: For the views, ask for a room facing the front

“Stylish hotel with excellent food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

Very stylish room with beautiful bathroom (with wet room shower). Very comfortable bed. An unexpected bonus was the large flat screen TV with freesat HD. First class food was served in the small but attractive dining room. Great attention to detail throughout - good design is obviously very important to the owners. The staff were efficient and friendly.

Highly recommended.

“I did not stay here the receptionist was too rude”

I was on a dream trip to escape 24/7 self employed pressure. My tent had broken, air bed punctured and a walk on Balnakeil beach had relieved some stress. I needed a room somewhere.
Called into reception to enquire if a single room was available (hotel is attatched to a bunkhouse)
A very snooty young lady replied to my question that we only have a twin room available at £114 per night this is a 4 star hotel and not suitable for you. I replied that I was only prepared to go up to £70 for somewhere with a less scruffy lounge. (touchet! I had a car full of very classy clothes but had spent 3 days rough camping)

Hi - thank you for your review. At macKay's we strive to offer the best possible customer service and take all feedback on board. In this case a prospective customer enquired about the availability of a single room - as we only have twin and double rooms we offered this but the customer was not prepared to accept what we had on offer. We absolutely always offer a warm welcome to all visitors, our staff are lovely and certainly never rude to anyone. If this customer had taken up our offer of accommodation we are certain they would have appreciated the excellent service and standards which macKays provides.
