“Good,but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Dornoch castle is situated in an absolutely beautiful village with magnificent beaches which must be superb in summer. My check-in was efficient and I was shown to my room which was probably the smallest room I have every stayed in - it must have been a converted broom cupboard! However,my host did explain this as the hotel was full. Not too much to be said as I was single and only there for the night. But this was so compact it was difficult to avoid tripping over items.
Changed and had a bracing walk on the beach followed by a pint in the local pub.Back to the hotel which has a cosy and enchanting reception area with a roaring fire - however,it was small so it quickly filled up.I was found a table and a chair and ordered a beef sandwich which was basic to say the least - a couple of slices of very rare beef and some horseradish with the tiniest clump of salad imaginable. This was gbp 6.25 which i thought was over-priced.
Bar prices were also inflated.
Breakfast next morning was good and have to say the staff were exemplary....so,so friendly!
All in all not the best of stays and do not think i will "hasten back!"

Room Tip: Avoid "Tain" room at all costs!!

Thank you Morchwestport for your comments.

I have spoken to my colleague who was working that night and showed you to your room and she has advised me that at no point was a request for another room mentioned and when asked you said that the room was fine.

If you had mentioned to us at the time of your unhappiness with the room, we would of happily moved rooms as we did have a couple of rooms left available which we would have been more than happy to move you to if the room had not be suitable.

We thank you for your lovely compliments about the hotel facilities but are very disappointed to hear you thought lunch and our bar prices where over priced.

Regrettably we are not owned by a chain of hotels, nor do we rent from a brewery, we are a family owned and run small hotel and therefore the bar prices are slightly higher than some other hotels that are owned by chains and breweries. Unfortunately, this is due to the high cost of buying in due to the inflated tax on alcohol therefore this reflects on bar prices but very rarely do we receive any complaints regarding this.

With regards to lunch, our beef is always cooked rare which is advised on at the time of ordering, our chef feels that anything other than rare spoils the taste of the beautiful beef which most people will agree with, but will however cook more if requested, I am just sorry that you felt that the sandwich was overpriced.

We are delighted that overall you had a pleasant stay and we do hope that you are able to visit us again in the future and maybe book a larger room when booking online.

Warmest wishes from all the team at Dornoch Castle

“Dornoch Castle Hotel - Not to be missed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

My wife and I had a lovely night in the Dornoch Castle hotel. We splashed out and stayed in the "Cathedral View" room, it had all the nice touches....champagne, sherry, dressing gowns, amazing selection of beverages and jacuzzi amongst others. The evening meal was outstanding and although the breakfast wasn't quite up to the same high standard it was certainly wholesome and appetising enough. The bar is one of the homliest I have ever set foot in with a roaring peat fire. The best thing however about this hotel is the staff, they are all exceptionally friendly and a real asset to the establishment. We will be back!!

“Nice hotel , website makes it looms nicer than it is though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

We got a good rate though groupon for £99 for 2 nights with breakfast in a garden room(cheapest room), the rooms are lovely that we stayed in , big , comfy , clean and modern so no complaints there .
The breakfast was very yummy and staff were lovely , Dornoch itself really hasn't much to do , you can go to the Eagle hotel a few minutes away which has a nice pub and does tasty reasonably priced food. Or you can walk to the beach which is lovely , or go for golf nearby.
You kind of need to drive though to explore the area .
The let down is that the website portrays the hotel in a much grander scale than what it is in reality , its beside the road , when you arrive the reception is a table in the pub , the bar is tiny , the hotel is quite small in general.
Im sure the more expensive rooms are lovely but the hotel is a very large b&b in my opinion .

Thank you pami.eire for your comments.

Dornoch outwith the tourist season still has plenty to see and do, there are beautiful walks to experience with gorgeous scenery, golfing for the golf enthusiast and the public transport system is very good should you wish to explore other towns etc nearby not to mention the fantastic shops in the village, Dornoch is for relaxing and enjoying time together.

We do not feel that the website portrays the hotel in the wrong light, it clearly shows pictures of all the rooms located in the hotel and information on things to see and do in the area, we pride ourselves on our homely feel hotel and try to ensure that each guest has a memorable stay full of highland friendliness, our reception area was intentionally done as it is to make it feel less formal and more welcoming and although our bar is small, it caters well to large parties and we can quite easily cater for weddings of up to 200 people without any problems.

As you mention the hotel is on a roadside but fail to mention that it is directly opposite the Cathedral in the centre of Dornoch and is not a main trunk road or carriageway.

We hope that you would be able to visit us again in a different season to experience everything possible but maybe Dornoch just isn't for you.

Thank you again for your comments.

“Highland Surprise”

We spent several days at the hotel and were pleasantly surprised for the middle of January, there were other guests in residence. Food was excellent, although overpriced. The room was nice, clean and large, however it was cold and would have benefitted from extra blankets in the room. We also ate in Eagle pub, along the road, food and service was excellent. We visited the Falls of Shin,Golspie(Dunrobin Castle) and Embo. The beach would probably be FAB in the summer. Would recommend it for a long week end for young and old with great views/scenery.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back have a sea view and garden view,(although the room can be cold ,with condensation...

Thank you M_Adams12 for your lovely comments.

We are delighted that you had a wonderful stay and enjoyed Dornoch.

I am sorry that you feel the food is overpriced, we do not feel it is overpriced for the quality provided as all products are fresh and local sourced wherever and whenever possible so that the best possible flavour and tastes are provided, this of course does come at a small price and most people are more than happy to pay for this quality.

With regards to our heating system needing upgraded, there are notes in your room and on your welcome letter given at check in, regarding our recently installed Biomass burner which provides heat and hot water to all of the hotel. This was installed in 2009/2010 therefore we feel that it is the most up to date and well managed heating system possible for a hotel.

Please also note that we have received a Green Award for our eco-friendly heating system.

We would have happily boosted the heating at any point if you had mentioned at the time you were cold, this would not have been an issue.

All the staff are delighted with your positive comments about the rest of the hotel and Dornoch and we hope that you are able to visit us again in the summer time to experience Dornoch in a different season.

“food excellent but pricey - overall a pleasant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

We stayed here at new year for a couple of nights and we enjoyed our stay. The chef is wonderful and the food was absolutely delicious, although quite pricey. Worth it though. Rooms were nice and hotel was as expected, full of character. My only gripe was the attitude of some staff members, a bit too full of their own importance and rather snobbish in my opinion. Other than that it was very nice. There is not a lot to do but if you are happy exploring and enjoy quaint old places then you will enjoy dornoch. Nice scenery and only a couple of hours drive to john o'groats. I thought the food was the best bit about our vist and our compliments to the chef!

Thank you PONGO313 for your lovely comments.

We are all delighted that you had a wonderful stay with us at New Year, it is a very special time and there is always so much going on.

I am very sorry that you felt that the attitude of some staff members where snobbish etc, we have never received a complaint like this about any member of staff and can only assume that something has been said which has been taken out of context, unfortunatley as this was not brought up at the time I am unable to offer anything apart from an apology for this.

We do hope that you are able to visit us again in the future and all the staff are delighted that you had a such a great stay and have pleasent memories to keep.
