We have been coming the The Hydro for quite a few years and witnessed some extremely positive changes and upgrades. The facilities for activities and especially the kids club - Big Country - is great and extremely well organised. Make sure you book this though as it gets extremely busy. The Culcreiff development has added to what is on offer if you're looking for an active holiday.
Overall the service is very good however a couple of points to note so that you are prepared;
Car Park is a short walk away and mostly uphill - drop your bags and any passengers off at the front and then go and park,
The Brasserie menu does get a bit limiting after 2 nights and the food although good is not great for the prices charged - have had much much better for the same cost,
Prices overall are becoming very expensive for rooms, food and drinks - costs for "extras" such as chips for your steak or a sauce to go with it is getting a bit ridiculous making it around £30. Portion control is also in evidence but prices do not reflect the small portions - 3 small tiger prawns as a starter - £8 ish. As long as you appreciate the cost then no surprises. However we stayed 3 nights in the Leigh top floor (which was very nice) and spent nearly £900 - no activities, one Indian takeaway from the town so only two evening meals in the hotel and one hour long power cut with no explanation from the hotel or contact initiated by them.
Will we be back?...probably as it is great for families with the funds to spare but we are now taking a lot more care over choosing short break holidays as this is getting ridiculously expensive.
