“Exceptional standards”

We spent one night at the castle, and felt that the service, accomodation and food was of exceptionally high service. For dinner we had the taster menu, every course was immaculate, and all the ingredients were fresh and full of flavour. The attention paid to every detail at breakfast was eqqually impressive. Our rooms were beautiful, completely comfortable, and very clean. The staff were attentive and helpful and so kind. We were very happy, and would love to stay there again.

“It was like visiting friends”

We spent three nights at Balfour Castle in one of their better rooms. The castle and it's rooms are maintained by a small staff and the whole place looks more like someone's personal home rather than a hotel. Dinner and breakfast is served with the other guests (at the same table) in the dinning room and drinks to follow in the library. Having it set up in this way, reminds us all of how we used to travel and talk to strangers while sharing a meal at an inn and how pleasurable it can be. The grounds are nice to walk around and the staff very freindly and helpful. I would totally recommend staying here if you are looking for something a bit different and are up for some new conversations with strangers. Also I have to mention the food was good and the wine selection was also surprisingly well-thoughtout. Although I went here with my husband, it would be also great to go here with friends, maybe more fun actually!

“Amazing wedding weekend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 September 2011

We recently got married at Balfour Castle and could not have asked for a better venue. The castle has been restored to a very high standard, with every bedroom and bathroom now decorated with beautiful antique furniture, wallpaper and accessories. Every room has a different theme, but all are cosy and welcoming, with large comfortable beds.
The food provided throughout the weekend was delicious, with canapes using local ingredients after the ceremony and an amazing breakfast the next day which was particularly enjoyable; eaten at the large dining room table with fresh fruits, breads, cooked breakfasts and non-stop tea!

Throughout the planning of the wedding Elodie and Jean-Baptiste were exemplary. Nothing was too much trouble, they had solutions to every problem we came across and were professional and friendly at all times. There were so many small touches which added to the day; the flower arrangements from the garden in all the rooms, the fire and warm welcome in the library on our return from the reception and the emergency sandwiches being delivered to the bridal party while we were getting ready!
Unfortunately adverse weather conditions meant that the BBQ we had planned for the Sunday was not feasible. Although this was quite a last minute decision Elodie and Jean-Baptiste were completely unfazed and suggested that the food could be cooked at the nearby school and the hall used for eating in. Due to their relaxed and efficient manner the weekend was entirely stress free. Could not have asked for a better venue or management.

The Balfour was a breath of fresh air, I have only just got around to reviewing it but absolutely excellent time. The location, service, staff were outstanding. We will be back soon, a real gem.

“Magical Castle with Secret Passage Way!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2009

I stayed as a solo traveler here, and it was incredible! The room I had was like walking back into time (down to the showerless tub in the bathroom)! I felt like a Princess. The Castle itself was a little smaller than I anticipated - but it was way cool. Fancy old rooms, even a secret passage way from the library to the conservatory...ha! It was like I was in the game CLUE (: Fabulous food as well, in a very family type setting. If you get there early you can stroll the gardens and almost have the island to yourself. It truly was a magical experience!

  • Liked — The seclusion and mystery of the island
  • Disliked — smaller building that what I had imagined
