“Thira is peaceful, quiet, dramatic, and great breakfasts!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 October 2009

We stayed three nights on Orkney Island at Thira. It is situated just outside the town of Stromness, so it has the quiet of the country with the pleasures of town quite accessible. From the main room there is an expansive view of the thrashing waters along the coast and the dark and forbidding cliffs beyond- and one can enjoy the coziness of the fireplace with a cup of hot tea while witnessing the stormy drama outside. The sites of Orkney are all easy driving distance, and Karin was an attentive, attractive, and utterly pleasant host. The Scottish breakfasts were huge and varied, and filled us up for a full day of sightseeing. I highly recommend Thira!

“Gorgeous location, friendly owners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2009

Thira B&B is a bit of a distance from Stromness, although walkable through a beautiful wild flower-strewn country lane. The view from the B&B is utterly breathtaking, looking out over the sea to the island of Hoy every morning over breakfast couldn't have been nicer. The owners are lovely and extremely helpful - we hadn't realised the necessity of hiring a car and a car was duly arranged for us despite it being one of the busiest weeks of the year. The room was huge and clean, with a big, comfortable bathroom attached. The bed was a bit creaky, but otherwise comfortable. The only tiny criticism would be that it would be nice to have some typical Orkney fare on the menu for breakfast, e.g. bere bannocks or similar.

“Wonderful getaway with spectacular views.”

We stayed here our first night in Orkney opting to move onward to another B&B (which is highly recommended by others) in Kirkwall for the rest of the trip... what a mistake as this was the far superior property. We had two rooms of this small B&B between myself, my boyfriend and my sister. The rooms are average sized. We had a large bathroom and closet in our room. The decoration is very simple, almost spartan but who wants to spend any time in the room when this house is set on the hill above the harbor with an amazing view! With nightime non-existant we spend more than our share of time sitting out looking at the views. The breakfast was fantastic as well. The hosts were very nice and helpful in dinner recommendations. It is a quick walk or drive to downtown. Stromness is a really nice town too. I perfered it over Kirkwall for it's simplicity and friendliness. It is also a better location by which to explore the nearby neolithic sites. Unfortunately, they do not take credit cards so be prepared to pay your bill in cash. Great experience overall.

  • Liked — Quiet, view, clean, food was good, location
  • Disliked — room decoration if it matters
