“Worst hotel I have ever stayed in. AVOID”

Please do not believe the marketing material for this hotel that suggests it has been recently refurbished and has an al a carte restaurant. Have a look at the pictures I have posted for the truth. I agree with other visitors comments this refurbishment must have been done in 1970. This is a very tired and run down hotel that is poorly maintained. The rooms, including the beds and bathrooms are filthy, as are the public areas. The restaurant toilets are gross and unusable. There are no facilities for children to sit with their parents in the hotel. We were told to sit in our filthy room with our children at 8.00pm as children were not allowed anywhere else in the hotel after this time. I complained to the general manager who was rude and aggressive. We checked out early, before the end of our booking after speaking to the General Manager.

“A Wonderful Orkney Treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Our first trip to the Orkneys, and now we're hoping it won't be our last. We picked the Stromness Hotel over others in part because of T.A. reviews, in part because of its proximity to the amazing Neolithic artifacts. We were very late in the season, and lucked into Room 2, one of the two on the front with huge windows and comfortable seating to look out on the piers, the ferries, the fishing boats, and the weather. The room was comfortable, the bed likewise, with a top sheet, which we Americans always delight in, large bathroom, and great breakfasts. We'd opted for the dinner/bed/breakfast option and weren't disappointed, was very fresh Orkney seafood prepared tastily. Our dinner server was our breakfast server and our receptionist at checkout, and such a delightful Frenchman! The parking leads directly onto the second floor where our room was, so we didn't have to struggle with the lift and luggage, it was most adequate for the two of us going up and down. Check out the RNLI shop across the street, she gets lonely in the off-season, and there's a great new and used bookstore a few blocks west.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 & 2 are on the front facing the pier, not to be missed.

“Quirky,.quaint and nice”

We stayed here for three nights (from 17 September as part of a group. We had a very friendly greeting and were amazed at the size of the room we had - it was old fashioned but comfortable with real old wooden sash windows - which rattled in the gale that was blowing - a judicious stuffing with toilet paper speedily cured the problem!. Spotless with a large bathroom and good shower. Breakfasts were superb as were the evening meals and I can heartlily recommend the local beer - particularly the Raven Bitter. A good wine list kept my husband happy. On the down side the lift was miniscule - but you got good cardiovascular exercise climbing the stairs! As regards teh staff it seemed that nothing was too much trouble. We'd certainly stay there again

“Lovely Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

We stayed here in early August and had a wonderful time. The hotel room could do with updating but was wonderfully clean with heaps of room. We found the staff very helpful and friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The restaurant served good meals. Would recommend it as a place to stay as it overlooks the harbour and is on the main street in Stromness. Am looking forward to going back!

“Wow! loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011

We stayed at the Stromness Hotel for three nights and just loved the place. Although a bit tired the place was charming and the staff so helpful. There was a mini hurrricane during the Saturday night with lashing rain, the wind whistled around the building and this just added to the great experience. The breakfasts and evening meals were first class and we will certainly return in the future. If we have any criticism it would have to be that the WiFi only worked in the Whisky Bar (there might be an ulterior motive here!) A comfy lounge would have been great (if there was one we didn't find it). Visitors MUST visit Julia's Cafe & Bistro by the habour (the orkney fudge cheesecake is to die for) and attend the Story Telling in the Stromness Hotel Whisky Bar (www,orkneyattractions.com) where Lynn will entertain you with wonderful stories in front of a peat fire ( a drink is included in the price), and, if you have the time John will take you on a brilliant and very informative walking tour of Stromness.

Room Tip: ask for a habour view room, we believe room 2 to be the best
