“Good hotel, great location. Cold.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 February 2011

A modern building with decent rooms and a nice bar/reception area. Very friendly and helpful staff. In February the heating was turned OFF in rooms they knew would be occupied! My room was so cold that it took nearly two days to warm up after I turned on the radiator!! And the bathroom had no heat at all. AND the shower was pitiful.
But the food was really good, and the manager was great, so they deserve 4*.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

An excellent location for touring the Orkenys. Rooms were clean, tidy and spacious. The staff were always friendly and helpful. If anything they could have been slightly more organised. On one occasion we had to ask for milk, then butter, coffee and fruit juice. Overall breakfast was lovely, especially the kippers!! On the whole this hotel has a lovely feel and is obviously popular with the locals as well as tourists.

“Lovely small hotel in a beautiful setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

Time to update these reviews I think. I stayed for one night after being on Orkney for a week performing in the St Magnus Music Festival (well worth atttending - as performer or audience). Reception was welcoming, price very reasonable, and the room was very clean, well-appointed and comfortable. The bars and lounges were well-maintained and welcoming. The bedrooms facing the water have a stunning view, and in the other direction a very nice view of the hills opposite. Breakfast was nicely cooked and served in a friendly atmosphere. If they could get a better broadband connection from the telephone exchange (they can do nothing about that) I would have no niggles at all - you can get wi-fi but not everywhere in the hotel.

“Standing Stones helped us out in a Jam”

We were in the orkney's for seven nights and had eaten at the Standing Stones for t wo lovely meals. My husband and I always ask about cats in the places that we stay because I can become deathly ill if I sleep in a place that has them. The well rated B&B that we were staying at was not forthcoming in this matter.I started to have health issues but thought it was the weather or her old furniture. When we saw the cat and told the owner, she told us to "get out-get out now". I will not say the name of that B&B. We had no place to go! We went across the road to where we had eaten the night before in the hope that they had space for us. The new owners of the Standing Sontes were wonderful and very understanding to our needs. We had a nice, very clean, and modern room.Every night I stayed up to watch the swan family play on the water until the midnight sun finally set beyond my large windows.Thank you Standing Stones for being so kind.We love you and would come again in a minute.

“Standing up for the Standing Stones”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 March 2007

Have just read the NZ review of this hotel and cannot understand it. Why post a piece in March 2007 about a trip in 2004? We have just spent five nights at the Standing Stones Hotel and have received nothing but kindness, courtesy and super service from everyone on the management and service team. The owner was particularly helpful. Indeed, we would rate the attitude of the staff as one of the hotel's strongest points. The value-for-money meals also impressed us. A lot of work is now being done to update the facilities there and so the hotel should become even better. Just one little niggle: noisy floorboards can be a major distraction in the early hours of the morning! Incidentally, we are in no way related to anyone at the Standing stones and though we are in the public relations business, we were not paid in any way for writing this review. We shall certainly go back there when we are next in Orkney.
