“Not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

We spent two nights here on an 11 day tour of Scotland and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room was bright and clean with superb views over the Loch and various groups of standing stones. Our welcome was warm and the service received personal and attentive throughout. It is rather pub-like as someone has pointed out, but the bar meals are great (both for value and quality) and the general atmosphere is cheerful without being noisy or impersonal; given that there are few such institutions in the area (hence little other choice locally for dining) it is to the credit of the staff and management that the food is so good, varied and fairly priced. The setting right in the heart of one of the world's great historical sites needs to be seen to be appreciated; we spent breakfast time (an excellent meal in every way) looking over the loch through the panoramic windows and feeling in seventh heaven. Recommended without hesitation.

“great location and views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2011

I liked a lot about this hotel. It overlooks a loch and you can see the Standing Stones. Our room had a great view. The reception staff were friendly and we had a good meal in the bar.I feel it is a bit expensive though .The rooms are quite small and we had no bath .It was £84 a night for each room. This worked out at £168 a night for our family of 4 for bed and breakfast. The vegetarian choices were a bit limited on the bar menu and the a la carte choice was expensive. There was good local beer at the bar .The coffee ran out at breakfast and took a while to be replaced. The breakfast was tasty and there was a lot of local information available. Our bar meal was good and the bar staff serving were exceptionally nice.

“Great location, great food, local beer and very helpful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2011

I recently stayed here with my partner and in-laws and was very impressed to say the least. I understand that they recently went through a change of management and that the hotel is going through a period of renovation. (These things do not happen overnight). The hotel is perfectly located for those wishing to visit The Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site (Maes Howe, the Ring o' Brodgar and the Stones of Stennes are visible from the hotel and only a short walk away - although be aware of traffic as the road does not always have a pavement).

Rooms were comfortable (mum-in-law reckoned that it was the most comfortable hotel bed she'd ever had) and had nice views across the loch. The bathrooms have decent, easy to regulate showers.

What made my stay (apart from the location) was the food. To be more specific, the a la carte menu. My group enjoyed a haggis and Highland Park pate with black pudding and oatcakes and a plate of scallops, black pudding and peppered rhubarb (it actually works really well believe it not) for starters followed by a lovely big seafood platter (there really was a lot of it and was beautifully presented) whilst I tucked in a pork steak with roasted veg. Local Orkney Brewery beer (try the "Dark Island") was accompanied by a very acceptable Chenin Blanc.

We were so impressed we asked to meet the kitchen crew. The head was away that evening and so we spoke to the two young Sous chef's who were on. I suggested that if they were not going for AA Rosettes that they seriously consider it...this restaurant is going places.

Waiting and reception staff very friendly.... very impressed and we will be coming back at some point. The same can not be said of the Ferry Inn in Stromness but that is another story.

“Lovely location but a bit tired....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2011 via mobile

Small room, beautiful view over loch. Food OK but service a little on the slow side. Not great at boiling an egg - needed two efforts at soft boiled egg and both ran from the shell on their own!! Decor a little shabby in places and windows could really do with a clean - when you have scenery like there is outside, please let us see it clearly!

“Okay if you want a pub”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 June 2011

Not the best of places even allowing for a recent change of management. Purports to be 3 star but is basically a pub with a number of rooms. As a hotel it does not rate 3 star and is expensive for what you get. The food is not "chef" quality. One bedroom had the curtains laying on the floor, the other a dirty bathroom. They did sort them out straight away but then we had no heating or hot water for two nights, then fortunately we managed to find another hotel.
