“Familiar athmosphere and wonderful cook”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

As I planned to visit Lossiemouth, I looked for a good accomodation in the near, and Forres was perfect. But I was pleasantly surprised with my choice. The building itself is very nice and very well maintained. The rooms were very nice arranged and each of them different from the other. And then...the last pleasant surprise: the food was excellent, very well prepared and lovely presented. As I mentioned to Julia, "his husband Lloyd not only loves cooking but he lives it," and it was apparent. He gave details about the way he had prepared every meal and, moreover they were all delicious. All in all, there was a round trip and Julia and Lloyd contributed with their hospitality and familiarity to a home-like feeling.

“what a find !!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We stay locally and are always looking for a new restaurant to try for special occasions, this time we've come up trumps!
The food is exceptional, prices on the high side locally but when you compare a starter here at around £7-8 and find other local hotels charging £6 for significantly poorer quality food, it really is superb value for money.
I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a quiet break and exceptional food, you won't be dissappointed.

“Superb.”

From the minute we arrived we felt at home here. Lloyd and Julia made us most welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The room was beautifully decorated and so peaceful. The hotel itself is stunning but the gems are Lloyd and Julia. The food which Lloyd produces is absolute heaven on a plate. I could wax lyrical for hours on what a talent Lloyd is. Julia appears to glide on a cloud of calmness, quietly ensuring that everything is just right for all her guests.
We've eaten all over the world in many 5 star hotels etc but we can honestly say this has to be the best food we have ever tasted.
We'll be back for sure.

“Absolutely wonderful short break at the Cluny Bank Hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2011

This review is really just a question of adding another voice to all who have said how great this place is! It’s hard to say anything that hasn’t already been said by other happy guests, but we do want Lloyd and Julia to know how much we enjoyed their hospitality.

Our room (the Queen Betty suite) was lovely, and the great luxury was the sheer amount of floor-space it afforded. Also, how nice to find a hotel that feels properly ‘homely’ and hasn’t had a modern makeover. We were relieved to discover that there weren’t any faux leather sofas or ‘feature walls’; just a big, comfortable room furnished to suit the age and style of the property.

The bathroom was spacious and spotless and hot water was very plentiful – thankfully, as it took quite a lot of it to fill the large corner bath. All in all we thought the room very good value for money.

Lloyd and Julia are simply the perfect couple for their chosen vocation. These guys have an absolutely innate understanding of what constitutes good service. Never intrusive, they manage to combine sheer courteous professionalism with helpfulness, efficiency, discretion and a large dose of charm. Not in the least bit pretentious or overbearing, their genuine welcome means one is able to rapidly relax in a ‘home from home’ atmosphere. Julia reminded me of the Shopkeeper in the Mr. Benn animations; if needed at any time and for whatever reason (to offer friendly advice, driving directions or fresh milk) she would appear “as if by magic”.

We had booked a ‘stay and dine’ package, which meant we ate at the hotel each evening of our three-night stay. This turned out to be the most enormously good decision, because having sampled Lloyd’s exquisitely prepared food it would be a real challenge to find somewhere else serving fare even half as good. Lloyd must be one of the UK’s best chefs. He understands his ingredients, which are locally sourced and freshly prepared to order, and also understands that with his own incredible talent for combining and cooking those ingredients to perfection he doesn’t need to add any silly, superfluous flourishes which so often spoil an otherwise good meal. His own unfettered enthusiasm for the food he serves goes to further enhance the experience of dining at the Cluny Bank Hotel.

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better – it does! Coupled to the wonderful food is a fantastic wine list with a host of reasonably-priced and interesting wines with great tasting notes, allowing you to choose the best accompaniment to your meal based on your own personal preference. Over three evenings we weren’t disappointed on any occasion.

To summarise, we would wholeheartedly recommend the Cluny Bank Hotel. Will we go back? Believe me – we can’t wait for the next opportunity to visit. A big thank you to Lloyd and Julia for one of the best hotel stays we’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

“Great service and food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

Lovely family run hotel. Jules and Lloyd are great hosts who provide great service to guests. The room was spacious with nice original features.

The gem in this hotel is the food. Lloyd is a talented chef. Taking great local produce and turning out what I would consider to be five star food. His passion for food comes through on the plate. We both had lamb. One asked for rare the other for med rare. Both plates delivered to the desired cooking - a talent I have rarely found. Lloyds deserts were superb. We finished off our meal in the comfortable bar where there is an extensive selection of fine malts.

Breakfast was also lovely. We had the full Scottish.

Overall a great hotel with outstanding food.
