“Clean, friendly, very nice people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2006

We stayed 2 nights in the McAlpine as part of our tour of Ireland/Scotland honeymoon. The McAlpine was clearly once a very grand hotel indeed - you can see the huge ballroom and notice that the breakfast room with it's spectacular views across the sea made it one of the best places I had breakfast on our two week tour. The breakfast itself was also good compared to some of the others I encountered! By September 2006 although the grandness of the venue had decreased slightly it does not want for charm, made all the more special thanks to the lovely staff.

Our money bought us a large hotel room which importantly was clean and had everything needed (a clean bathroom and a telly) although admittedly we didn't spend much time in the room as Arran is one beautiful place. Oh it has a bar too, in which you'll find Tam, in charge of the place and the folk musicians who regularly play there, one of the Dubliners and some of The Sensational Alex Harvey band were due up shortly after we left, and his occasional barman John. We went in there for a drink shortly before, as we planned, going to bed but with these two installed behind the bar this soon turned into a terrific evening culminating in a guided tour of Tam's whisky collection.

Tam and his staff are working hard to turn The McAlpine into a music venue of some note - we wish them all the best in this endeavour and look forward to returning there soon for another great stay. Thanks!

“Never Again - still haven't forgiven my friend who booked this hotel.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2006

This was by far the nearest to Fawlty Towers I will ever get but not as funny, stayed there last Saturday night (09.09.06), the room was dirty, we had no TV, no light in the bathroom, no cable for the kettle and a bath full of what looked like dog hairs which hadn't been cleaned. We would have left immediately if it was not the only place on the island with any vacancies ( I now know why). We could only pay by cash, should have realised something was amiss.
My advice, spend the money on a tent and stay on the beach, what I would do if the situation ever arose again.

A novice walker who loved the Island, just couldn't believe the hotel.

“Unbelievably bad - Don't go near it”

If you thought the Bates Motel looked scary try this place. The minute we walked in, we were hit with this awful damp smell and all that could be heard was the owner screaming at someone we couldn't actually see, to shut the f'ing windows because the f'ing heating was on. We took one look at the bedroom which can only be described as bleak and filthy and promply left. We unfortunately had to attend a gig being held there that night and experienced the grim bar situation. The staff were incredibly rude and quite odd. I've stayed in cockroach infested huts for £2 a night that are better than this place. It has a cheek to call itself a hotel. Seriously not even if you're desperate should you think about this place.

“Absolutely Awful - avoid at all costs!”

This Hotel is by far the worst establishment I have ever stayed in - I'd give it no stars but that's not an option! The rooms were dirty, the beds were about 100 years old and the breakfast was inedible. What's worse is that the staff didn't even care...I could go on but it's too depressing. Don't stay here - sleep in your car you'll have a more pleasant night!
