“Charming Victorian Hotel and gardens, strange service......”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 June 2010

Very clean rooms with comfortable beds. Food was fab. Very enjoyable visit, will return!

This was the original Victorian hotel in the Village and has retained many of the period charms. The conservatory and gardens were a bonus on a lovely weekend of warm sunshine. The hosts are charming but there is a wierd arrangement in such a small place where the bar and restaurant are franchised out so often the hotel staff were unaware of what was happening in them and vice versa. The dour barmaid/restaurant manager was a bit hard work, but had a dark sense of humour that was a refreshing change from the "Have a nice day" schlock service you get in many establishments.

Do not miss the Machrie stone circles just 4 miles out of town to the North. They take a bit of a walk to get to, but are incredible....7 seperate stone circles within a few hundred yards of each other ranging fron the Neolothic to the Bronze age with some predating stonehenge and some of the stones are huge - an amazing place.

“Tired, outdated & grubby, won't be around much longer in this state”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2010

It really is a shame, because this is the closest B&B to one of the best Golf Clubs in the world, Shiskine. I hate to say this (& I do) but the carpet in my bedroom was covered in other peoples hair. I only know this because the compeed plaster on my foot (over 6 rounds of golf later) collected most of them prior to removal, pre shower!!
Maybe the hoover bag was full up, I don't know but I was freaked out all the same. The rest of the place needs updating it's tired and generally grubby. Had 2 meals there, the fish & chips for lunch were ok and I have to say that the breakfast was excellent. The bed was fine & the sheets were clean. Bathroom area was also clean & tidy. Overall, very dissapointing.

We would have been very happy to discuss the problems you had with someone else's hair on your socks. As to the place being outdated I couldn't agree more. Tired too. Grubby is harsh. But the customer is right. Especially about the clean sheets and good night's sleep.

“Fantastic curry”

Food and service is excellent. The bar is friendly and quiet with some real ales from Arran, a good selection of malt whiskys, and a selection of games (Chess, draughts, backgammon, dominoes, etc). We were there for the curry buffet on a Sunday evening; probably the best curry this side of Calcutta.

“Rooms o.k. if you,re under 5ft tall”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 August 2005

Our party of 4 adults and 3 teenagers booked into this hotel on the west coast of Arran for one night. We had booked two family rooms. One room with a double and a single bed had been recently decorated and was fine size wise. However, if a hotel advertises a room as being able to sleep 4 people, they must realise that at least one of those is likely to be an adult who is more than 4 feet tall. Our room had two dormer windows with our double bed underneath them. Don't sit up in bed suddenly! The door into the bathroom was tiny! The room had obviously not been decorated for a while. As we were only there for one night, we all had a good laugh about being in an Alice in Wonderland house, but it would not have been funny to have been there longer. We cannot complain about the food, and the two waitresses were very helpful. As for the proprietor, all we would say is if you are going to run a hotel, it is necessary to be friendly and sociable, not to tell your guests, who are playing scrabble quietly at 11p.m. to turn off the lights and shut all the doors when they come to bed!And if you are going to have a guests comments book, don't tippex out the ones you don't like!
