“Simple and cheerful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2009

This is a basic hotel, intended as a venue for golfers using the links at Crail and St Andrews. The room we had was warm and spotlessly clean, very comfortable in a classic, Scottish way. The TVs only have terrestrial (analogue) channels.

The food in the bar is fine: pub food, not pretentious but cooked fresh to order and using local ingredients.

A major reason to stay here is that it's pet-friendly, so you can keep your dog with you as long as it's house-trained (which ours is) for a UKP5 supplement.

“An unfriendly and slightly grubby disappointment in a beautiful place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2009

I stayed overnight after taking my daughter to St Andrews to start her university course - St Andrews itself had no beds to spare. Downstairs the place is gloomy, dominated by a large bar which has all too clearly not been redecorated since the the smoking ban, to judge by the worn, dirty carpet and walls. There is no restaurant for dinner, only uninspiring bar food. The bedroom was spartan: small windows, uncomfortable bed, bathroom with a vinyl floor. Breakfast was dispiriting: served without a hint of a smile, with cheap, low quality bacon and sausage and weak coffee. The real surprise came when I asked to the use the bar phone to call a taxi to take me back to St Andrews where I had left the car the previous evening, there being no mobile signal downstairs. I had no change, so was told I couldn't use the phone. Amazing. Really not good enough for £68 a night, however pleasant the Fife coast.

“family run delightful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2008

I visited for 5 days and nights and had a very enjoyable time. The newly refurbished room was extrememly elegant and comfortable.
Very clean and the staff were all helpful and very pleasant. The food was delicious, cooked by the proprietor herself. The hotel bar and retaurant are used by many local people and they made the atmosphere even better. The inside of the hotel is beautifully furnished and full of "old world charm". It is the ideal place to visit St. Andrews and many golf courses.

“Comfortable, but HUGELY overpriced...”

Carpets not fitted appropriately, broken catch on the windows, dubious decor... OK, it was comfortable and clean and in a good location. So wouldn't have minded about all that, its a 2* hotel - But £95 a night for this was bordering on the offensive...

The hotel seems to cash in on location and the fact that there were no other rooms available in Crail.

Pretty poor really - if it had been of a more reasonable price, maybe I'd have given it a better review...

  • Liked — It was clean I suppose
  • Disliked — Overpriced, ugly, awful views
  • Tips/Secrets — Crail is a beautiful place - this hotel is a blot on its landscape.
