Given the friendly and helpful manner of the staff, it would be unkind to be too harsh on the Craws Nest Hotel. The staff do the best with the hotel they've got, but it doesn't appear to have been redecorated since the Queen dropped by in 1982. There are photographs of this visit everywhere and I suspect the owners have preserved the hotel ever since in tribute to this occasion but it's time to let go of the anaglypta and get the paintbrush out.
My wife and I booked this up so we could attend the Pittenweem Arts Festival. We knew we wouldn't be staying in the hotel a lot so weren't bothered too much what it was like.
On the positive side, the standard of cleanliness is good, as is the breakfast and the location is great for walking into Anstruther and Pittenweem. Areas for improvement include the decor and soundproofing. Our room's view consisted of the back of the other side of the hotel, and this is the view I think around half the rooms will have.
Overall - it's okay as long as you don't intend spending much time in it. It's great if you're looking for an 80's nostalgia trip.
Note to owners - an alarm clock wouldn't go amiss. Please clean on top of the wardrobes I put my bag on it and it was covered in a thick layer of dust when I brought it down. Get rid of the paper tablecloths and give us a bigger breakfast plate. It's a reasonably sized breakfast. Avoid the trick of putting it on a small plate, it just makes the whole plate overcrowded and difficult to eat from. And please, give us a whole black pudding. I've never been served up a semicircle of black pudding before. It looks really cheap. And your prices aren't.
One tip for guests - get to Scotland's Secret Bunker. It's 5 miles away and one of the most unique tourist experiences you'll have.
