“Stock Hill House Rocks!”

What a place. Tucked away up a winding driveway is a 'not so little' hidden treasure in the Dorset countryside. Recommended to me by other friends we were immediately blown away by the service which I can only describe as 'proper old school', the likes of which I've not experienced before - anywhere! They certainly have some wacky décor, but this all just added the the immense enjoyment of the whole experience. We stayed for one night in a huge but comfortable bedroom with an equally impressive and huge en-suite bathroom.

Being a nature lover I couldn't help but be seduced by the grounds. Extensive and private, we enjoyed cooling our feet in a babbling brook (and losing a flip flop down stream) and watching the ducklings on the pond. After dinner we were mesmerised by the bats, flying so close you could hear them.

Breakfast - well - it's just what you hope for; full English, home made muesli and house specials.

Recommended? Highly. Relaxing? Definitely. Return visit? Without question.

“A friendly, comfortable hotel efficiently run by dedicated owners with an excellent restaurant serving high quality food”

We have visited this hotel several times in recent years and have found that standards never vary.

Service is always excellent and friendly. The rooms are comfortable and of good size and several have been recently refurbished. The restaurant serves excellent food provided by a skilled chef/patron using mostly local produce some of which is grown on site.

The hotel is well positioned either for visiting local places of interest, e.g.. Stourhead House and Grounds, Sherborne, Shaftesbury, etc. or as a base for travels to the South Coast.

“A very successful weekend (as we have come to expect)”

This time back into room 3 which has recently been redecorated and partially refurnished. The standard of service throughout this small hotel is superb. What a pleasure it is to find beds made by our return from breakfast and bathroom tidied during dinner.

Dinner is always the highlight of any stay at Stock Hill with a constantly changing menu and the occasional gesture towards a regular guest's favorite dish.

“Perfect for a quiet celebration”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2008

Stock Hill is a large Victorian house converted to a hotel, run with a personal touch by Nita and Peter Hauser, experienced hoteliers. Peter is the chef and Nita looks after 'front of house'. Her three lady assistants are closely supervised and the high level of service achieved in waiting, cleaning and hosting really shows as a result. Accommodation here is based on dinner, bed and breakfast, a fact that may not suit everyone, but it is clearly a formula that generates a high level of repeat bookings.
Our room had a large, comfortable bed and a large bathroom, with "his and hers" basins along one wall.
Men are requested to dress (tie, jacket, definitely no denim) for dinner, and guests are invited to join Nita for an aperitif in the lounge before dinner. This suited us well and we enjoyed the banter. The menu choice is excellent, as is the quality of the offering from Peter and Lorna in the kitchen. A comprehensive wine list is available. Any wine and pre-dinner drinks are the only extras. Breakfast is served, not taken from a buffet.
We enjoyed our stay. The isolated location, grounds, the warm welcome on the doorstep and the house-party style, suited us well. Our only advice would be, not surprisingly, to not expect this to be an informal hotel stay. It is for discerning customers who expect, and get, a high standard of attention and service.

  • Liked — The warm welcome and the level of comfort
  • Disliked — Nothing in particular

“Stock Hill is a hidden gem”

This hotel is a hidden gem! The level of service is excellent and the food, which has an Austrian influence, is simply superb. The hotel is a Victorian mansion run by the owners Peter and Nita Hauser. Nita is front of house and Peter with Lorna, Nita's sister, the chefs.
Our choice is always small, high quality hotels with excellent food. We normally like to try different hotels, but this is the only one we go back to year after year. It is ideal for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions.
Treat yourselves and try it, you'll love it.

  • Liked — This is more of a lovely country house than a hotel
  • Disliked — Not all rooms are in the house, but the annexe has only 3 rooms and is attached to the house
