“Nice welcome needs a facelift”

This hotel has so much potential but is seriously in need of a facelift. My friends and I paid a quick visit to the bar 12 months ago. I say quick because we walked in and straight out again. We found ourselves stopping one night here recently because it was the only guest house with vacancies within a 25 mile radius. Staff were lovely helpful and friendly and food was good. But the whole place looks shabby, tired and outdated. I have just read that the current owners have only recently taken over. If that's the case then hopefully they can give it the attention it so desperately deserves.

“Friendly,Pleasant & Comfortable B & B”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 July 2010

We stayed here last weekend on the top floor suite. We were immediately welcomed & shown to our room which was very comfortable, clean with a flat screen tv / dvd. Plenty of hot water and clean towels and bathrobes. We had a very nice full English breakfast sitting in the sunshine on the decking the next morning. The Guest House is in an ideal position just a short walk to the bay. We recommend the Durbeyfield and we will return.
I notice that a few of the earlier reviews were less than complimentary regarding this guest house but now under new management we would recommend it.The only criticism we have is that it is a little dated and need of modernization but Rome was not built in a day and you can really tell and see the new owners are making an effort.

“Friendly and good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2010

We received a warm welcome after a long day walking a section of the South West coastal path The beer was good. The food in the restaurant was very good. The bedroom was clean and comfortable with a small en-suite shower room, bur we also had use of another shower room and bathroom down the corridor, Very good value for money.

“An average stay in a dated B&B”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 June 2010

We stayed in the Durbeyfield for one night last weekend. The most recent reviews suggest a marked transformation since the new owners have taken over, but to be honest we found the B&B sub standard and very tired and dated looking. Our room was OK (recently re-painted) but furniture was of a poor quality and shower pressure was sporadic. Our friends' room was of a much worse quality with a tiny en suite.

The owners were relatively friendly on arrival (although the car park was full so we had to pay for parking at the visitor's centre) but not so friendly the next morning when our breakfast orders were wrong and we had to wait 45 mins for it to be served. Not great food either - cheap sliced bread and mouldy fruit.

The location is good, literally 2 minutes walk from the sea, and the fish restaurant we ate in on Saturday night was really excellent. But we won't be returning - either to West Bay or to Durbeyfield.
