“New Year's Eve Getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

We have just returned from two nights at The Crown in the company of three other couples. We all booked superior rooms and were not disappointed. All of our rooms were clean, comfortable and well appointed with good quality bathroom fittings, loads of hot water and a generous hospitality tray. Our mobiles also had excellent reception (Orange/TMobile) which was a pleasant surprise in the middle of Exmoor.

Our welcome was warm and the service throughout was excellent. Breakfasts are leisurely and belt busting and the restaurant is well appointed and the food excellent. The six course banquet on New Year's Eve was delicious and the vegetarian alternative was well thought out and interesting - none of the usual boring, predictability of vegetarian menus!

An added bonus was the excitement and spectacle of the Devon & Somerset Stag Hounds meeting in the car park this morning - fantastic - and one of our party won a bottle of Scotch in the raffle!

Only one minor criticism - we could have done with a little more excitement around midnight on New Year's Eve. We found out later that it was all going on in the bar (we would have gone in there if we had known) but the residents' bar and lounge was all a bit tame. That said we were all so full and sleepy it wasn't really a big issue.

A true country hotel welcoming to one and all and - for those of you who may be worried about staying in a hotel that welcomes dogs - don't be. There were several staying when we were there but there was no trace of them ie hair in the public areas and everywhere was clean and fresh with no doggy odours!

We'd definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Suggest anyone with mobility problems avoids the second floor as the stairs are steep. The largest...

“Very accommodating accommodation!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

We stayed for a couple of nights as part of a shooting trip. The owners were very friendly and welcoming of the 4 legged (dogs) members of the party! Food was excellent both at our evening meal and for breakfast. The locals in the bar were also v friendly and happily chatted to us...

The only negative thing was that we stayed on the top floor (room 6 I think) and the walls were very damp. It had been heavily raining so maybe there is some remedial work that needs done.

Thank you for your comments and glad you enjoyed your stay, especially our friendly bar. We'll look into the points you raised concerning room 6 and endeavour to remedy the problem. We look forward to seeing you again sometime.

“Excellent hotel in a quiet village”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

For a break in the centre of Exmoor but surrounded by all home comforts, the Crown Hotel is the place to stay. It's very historic and there's a friendly welcome. I stayed just for B&B and the breakfast was excellent.

Room Tip: A first floor room towards the back of the hotel faces west and there's no traffic noise; just t...

“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2011

We booked on Laterooms & got a rate of £98 per night. We stayed for 2 nights. We took our two dogs with us. On arrival, we where made to feel very welcome.in fact the service we got from all the team at the hotel was excellent
The room was large & very confortable. We ate at the bar the first night & the food was excellent (along with the service!)
The breakfast was good & the next evening we ate at the restaurant which was excellent.

Overall an excellent hotel & we'll be back !

“Nice hotel in excellent location but forget the over rated restaurant.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2011 via mobile

This is a nice hotel in lovely surroundings and it's own beautiful grounds. Helpful, cheerful staff. Good breakfast but our short stay was spoiled by the disappointing food in the AA rosetted restaurant which was overpriced and some of which (3 chicken dishes) were so overcooked that I felt I had to say so - the response? " well, they don't always get it right"! At £25 for 2 courses they should! I would recommend the hotel but not the restaurant.
