We have just returned from two nights at The Crown in the company of three other couples. We all booked superior rooms and were not disappointed. All of our rooms were clean, comfortable and well appointed with good quality bathroom fittings, loads of hot water and a generous hospitality tray. Our mobiles also had excellent reception (Orange/TMobile) which was a pleasant surprise in the middle of Exmoor.
Our welcome was warm and the service throughout was excellent. Breakfasts are leisurely and belt busting and the restaurant is well appointed and the food excellent. The six course banquet on New Year's Eve was delicious and the vegetarian alternative was well thought out and interesting - none of the usual boring, predictability of vegetarian menus!
An added bonus was the excitement and spectacle of the Devon & Somerset Stag Hounds meeting in the car park this morning - fantastic - and one of our party won a bottle of Scotch in the raffle!
Only one minor criticism - we could have done with a little more excitement around midnight on New Year's Eve. We found out later that it was all going on in the bar (we would have gone in there if we had known) but the residents' bar and lounge was all a bit tame. That said we were all so full and sleepy it wasn't really a big issue.
A true country hotel welcoming to one and all and - for those of you who may be worried about staying in a hotel that welcomes dogs - don't be. There were several staying when we were there but there was no trace of them ie hair in the public areas and everywhere was clean and fresh with no doggy odours!
We'd definitely stay again.
