“Back again soon!!!!!”

I've always believed that it's not the place that matters but who you are with. I now believe that the place plays such huge part in that experience. The Two Bridges provides the atmosphere for the most excellent of breaks!
We were welcomed by three very white, very big geese who made sure we made as rapid an entrance to the hotel that we could manage and one massive duck which I do hope the chef doesn't have an eye on as an alternative 'fois gras' type thing.
I stayed with my new best friend for two nights in one of the 'historic' rooms - ironically we had joked days before in the theme of 'Gone with the Wind' ... 'quite frankly my dear' and 'not giving a damn' - we found ourselves in the Two Bridges historic room called 'Vivienne Leigh' - remarkable, fate, a sign! We'll see :) But most of all the most fantastic tribute to such a wonderful actress. I don't know what the other historic rooms hold but I am looking forward to our next visit to find out!
As for what most of you are reading to find out ...
The staff are absolutely the best, welcoming, friendly, nothing was too much trouble, took the time to make every guest feel special despite the pressure we know they are under to deliver the best service in such an establishment.
The food ... well where to begin .. from the coffee selection to the 'a la carte' menu, the wine list to the best breakfast selection I would ever want to experience - fantastic!!! As for breakfast hmmm finished at 09:30 & we had the audacity to turn up at 09:25 - absolutely no problem what so ever! I have experienced other establishments where you were obviously not turned away but oh boy did you know you were an absolute inconvenience, but not at the Two Bridges.
Oh and the 'piece de resistance' they have a chess board for the use of all guests (plus several other board games) - never played before but on an inclement Saturday afternoon what better way to pas the time - learnt to play & just happened to beat said new best friend!! feeling a bit smug about this!! :)

Room Tip: Just arrive!!!!!!

“Disappointing Lunch”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Four of us called in for lunch on a weekday and were shown into the dining room. This was a large room, with attractive place settings on the tables and interesting paintings on the walls. We ordered lunch, comprising soup and a main course. The soup (leek and potato) was excellent but the main course (belly pork) was awful. I pointed out to the waiter that the belly pork was actually "belly fat", because there was little meat and just a lump of white ugly fat. The meal itself was nouveau cuisine, which meant that a very small helping had been placed onto a large plate. It looked awful and did not taste very good. The waiter, a man aged in his early twenties, who looked around twelve, also doubled as a barman in the reception area. He did not even bother to answer my complaint. We paid and left, never to return. The service was bad anyway, because the two waiters we saw looked to be in their teens and were busy laughing and joking with one another. This inn has atmosphere and is known as a historic attraction, but is now owned by a large catering company and it appears that no one had control of the day to day operation. How disappointing.

“Unrivalled customer service at Two Bridges”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

We booked the hotel as a present for a friend's special birthday surprise. The January deal was £29 per person bed and breakfast which is a tremendous saving over the normal £70 pppn. The other good thing about the hotel is that they openly welcome dogs at no extra charge with 50% of the rooms allocated for the purpose. We also booked the Sunday lunch carvery at £17.95 per person for 3 courses and that too was very good value for money.

On arrival the hotel looks like a typical old white country establishment sitting beautifully in a very pretty and secluded Dartmoor location at near Princetown. We proceeded to unload the car and before long we were approached by 3 geese making it clear that it was their territory but as we were to find out during our 2 night stay, were perfectly harmless - if you kept your distance.

We checked in at reception on a cold Sunday afternoon and what a welcome - lounge fire blazing, people enjoying a lunchtime apperitif before carvery lunch and the most friendly receptionist I think we have ever encountered. She was most helpful, extremely jolly and couldn't have got our trip off to a better start. Our rooms were on the first floor - our friend's a little larger than ours - but we got the huge king sized bed - both overlooking the front gardens and first impressions were favourable. Sure, the rooms are well used and could probably benefit from a bit of decoration but on the whole nothing to complain about - except perhaps a a wall mounted shower might have been more convenient.

After unpacking we proceeded to the bar and again, couldn't believe the level of customer service provided by Tim who immediately introduced himself with a warm welcome and handshake. I wish I could be more complimetary about the lager on tap but it's only a personal taste!

The carvery lunch was excellent and the restaurant is obviously very popular with people
from local villages. There was a superb selection of starters from which to help yourself and the roasts were a choice of beef and lamb with salmon on offer to vegetarians. There was also a good selection of desserts and cheese to choose from.

Others have commented that the breakfast is a bit small but none of us had any complaints - true there was only one slice of bacon and one sausage but how much more do you want when there are a good selection of fruits, yoghurts, cereals, danish pastries, potatoes, egg, white pudding, tomato, fried bread and mushroom and toast and jam to go with it! You can also opt for smoked haddock and poached egg or smoked salmon with scrambled egg on a bagel.

We stayed 2 nights and apart from being woken at 1.30 am with the most ear splitting fire alarm going off (due to a power cut) we had no complaints at all. We would whole heartedly commend all of the staff for their friendliness and first class customer service and on behalf of our little group, thank you for making it a memorable birthday surprise for our friend.

Room Tip: Request a room with a proper shower - we had to hold the shower attachment in the bath.

“Restaurant lovely; rooms - not so much”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We were booked in with a large party for a celebration lunch, with two rooms booked for some of the family to stay overnight. First impressions are good: the bar/lounge area is old-fashioned, but in the right way, and the staff (though busy chatting on the 'phone when we arrived, and in no mood to finish their conversation!) were inexperienced but tried to be helpful.

Eventually, we managed to get the right two rooms (a comic process) which were not great. The ground floor room, needed for the elderly members of the party, was OK, but the mock half-tester bed was a small double (as was the one in the other room) which they found very uncomfortable, and the bathroom was totally unsuitable - a shame when the room was ideally placed for the disabled - as it had a bath but no shower. The other room, booked for a family of four, was very dreary - again with a small double bed, and a normal single with a pull-out bed underneath. This was fine, although there was literally no space between the beds (all in a row) so you had to get out of bed at the foot end to avoid trampling on someone! The room looked out over the roof of the Function area, which meant as there was a wedding going on that night the children could not get to sleep until after midnight...perhaps not the ideal spot for their only Family room! The bathroom was pretty grim, and needed a proper clean - it must have been a least twenty years old (and I'm being generous here!)

However, the food at lunchtime (and in the evening) was pretty good - certainly better than the rooms had us expect. They coped well with the large party, although there was a lot of "who ordered this?" going on, but the staff were young and doing their best. We tried lots of different things off the menu, and everybody seemed pleased with what they had.

If you are just going there to have a cream tea by the fire and a long walk across the moors, then it will be perfect. If you are having lunch and a walk, ditto. But staying over...not so much.

Room Tip: Read all the reviews here and try and work out which rooms are bearable!

“Heaven in Dartmoor - a hotel not to be missed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2012

My wife and I have just returned from a three day mid week break at the Two bridges to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This is a hotel experience not to be missed. The hotel is located in a remote location on Dartmoor and could not be faulted. If you want a cosy hotel with real wood fires and excellent service, this is for you. The staff are brilliant, very friendly and welcoming and make you very much at home. Thanks to Jarrard, Clare and all the staff for making our stay so memorable. Unlike many English hotels, this hotel is very well maintained and the staff are quite rightly proud of the Two Bridges. We stayed in the Gulliver room that was spacious, spotlessly clean. complete with a four poster bed and had wonderfu views of the moors. The longe areas of the hotels had open fires with very comfy chairs, perfect to relax in with a drink. The restaurant is excellent and the food was some of the best we have eaten in an English hotel. Don't miss the three geese in the hotel grounds - used in the flm Warhorse, but be careful!
This hotel should be a must on everybodies list and we will definitely return

Room Tip: The premier rooms are worth the extra
