“The perfect retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2011

I have stayed in the Chapel on several occasions and each time I have found everything to be perfect. I love the continental breakfast, the fridge is always full of lots of goodies and there is always plenty of cereal and fresh bread too. Personally, I do not like full cooked english breakfast, so would much rather have the flexibility of eating fruit, yoghurt, cereal, pancakes, toast etc in the room at my leisure. I also love the bathroom with its heated under floor tiles and large bath, it's just perfect for a long soak after a day on the moors. There is also a sufficient heater in the room so you have the flexibility of controlling the temperature to suit you. The owners have thought of everything, there is even a bookcase full of maps and walking guides for you to borrow.

“A little gem..”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2011

You will recieve a wonderful warm welcome from Sally and her family. The rooms in "The Oratory" are spacious and clean, the bathroom in the "Chapel" is exquisite. We have also stayed in "The Beeches" (next door) which is lovely and comfortable.

We loved staying at "The Oratory", the wide range of continental breakfast goodies set us up very well for a long walk on the moor. While the self catering Beeches kitchen has all the mod-cons you need to look after yourself.

Can't recommend both properties highly enough.

“Cold!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2011

Not a place to stay for anyone who feels the cold - the heating is turned on twice a day - early in the morning which means we woke up hot, then got cold over breakfast when it went off. Then it comes on again at 5ish - not much good when we arrived back soaked and cold at 4pm on a miserable winter's day. By about 930 it was gone again.

Beds were hard and springy and breakfast was serve yourself from a fridge in the room.

Not my cup of tea at all, though the owner was friendly and the rooms nicely decorated. Great bathroom too with lovely bath - but so so cold.

Really sorry that you were cold during your stay - I do advise guests on arrival to leave on the large oil filled radiator in the Chapel Annex, and this is also highlighted in the room notes. This then keeps the room at a pleasant temperature all day. Unfortunately this advice had not been followed and the radiator had been turned off. As soon as the problem was bought to our attention the house central heating was turned on. It was unfortunate that your stay coincided with the very cold snap over Xmas and outside day time temperatures didn’t rise above freezing, we are at 1400 feet and as such outside temperatures are colder than normal, if guests need to borrow extra layers or waterproofs to enjoy the outdoors during their stay we have a plentiful supply. We make it clear in all our advertising that breakfast is continental style and help yourself, and regularly receive praise for the quality of spread we offer. Should guests like a full English we can recommend local cafes withing a few hundred meters. The matresses used in our facility were new 6 months ago and are regularly changed, they are of a medium/firm rating as this is what most guests prefer.

We are dedicated to ensuring our guests enjoyment of their holiday on Dartmoor and are indeed sorry that we did not meet your expectations, we are pleased though that you enjoyed the lovely bathroom with underfloor heating. Kind Regards Sally

“Wonderful hospitality”

I stayed there for 2 nights in December whilst attending a training course at Dartmoor prison. I was allocated the annex which is huge & very well appointed. The self assembly continental breakfast is monumental, one couldn't ask for anything better.

Sally is a very friendly & helpful hostess. I strongly recommend the Oratory.
