“Great food, great staff, ok rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

We recently stayed for one night at the Dartmoor Inn @ Lydford. We wanted a country getaway and chose the Dartmoor Inn primarily on the strength of the food reviews and its location (great walks right from the door). The food and the service was exceptional. We were greeted with a warm welcome and offered tea, coffee and homemade biscuits on arrival. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and the service was brilliant - friendly and extremely professional. The breakfast was also great. The bedroom was spacious and prettily decorated, however it really needed a refresh. I imagine the photos on the website were taken when they were newly decorated. They weren't dirty or unpleasant but the pictures on the website promised so much more and the price felt expensive for the standard of accommodation. Overall, we had a good stay and I have given the Inn a 4 out of 5, but if the review was based solely on the rooms, I'm afraid it would be lower. Please redecorate and we would come again and again.

“Fantastic Lunch in excellent surroundings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2011

Called in for lunch, lovely atmospheric pub in beautiful surroundings. Very warm, friendly welcome. Superb service and lovely food. Good value for money. Lovely log fire. Perfect on a cold, wintery day!

“Overpriced and needs a makeover”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We have been visiting the restaurant for some years for lunches, so we chose to stay there over Christmas this year. It is close to family and the location is wonderful as there are some lovely walks nearby which we have enjoyed for many years. The downstairs of the Inn is acceptable if somewhat worn and dated with a good fire to make it welcoming. However, when we arrived there was no one to greet us - the place was empty - and we had to knock loudly on the kitchen door for assistance. I suspect they had enjoyed a busy day!

We had specifically asked for a Tea making tray in the room which was not there on arrival, and we had to wait then for one to appear - and we were charged £6 for it! The room we had is the one featured in the photos but the photos are deceptive. The bathroom in particular needs a complete makeover with mould in several places, a cracked floor lino and the room itself is smelly! It wasn't dirty, just old. The bedroom was reasonable and the bed was comfortable with a good mattress on it, but a light hanging out of its socket is unattractive and easily remedied. It must be their best room as we were the only people staying there. Our room were shabby and warn and rather dingey in the winter light. The room is on a busy main road but the secondary glazing worked well enough to keep out the worst of the heavy traffic noise. This was not a problem to us and we slept well.

The breakfasts by the fire were excellent with lovely home made bread and so we were looking forward to our Christmas lunch - which was disappointing - huge portions of turkey but only 2 sprouts and half a carrot! I joke not. I am sure this was a personal take on the meal as everyone else emptied their plates! More vegetables would have made the meal more palatable. I guess we should have asked. The night before I had asked for fruit as a pudding and they had none to offer us!

The food has usually been very good at the Dartmoor Inn but over the years we have eaten there we have noticed that it has become expensive and the portions small (apart from our huge portions of turkey!) Now that we have stayed there we felt that the accommodation is expensive too for the standard on offer. We have stayed at other hotel of a similar standard and paid far less. We felt that £120 per night with extra for a tea tray was too pricey for a well used room. And food is getting very expensive too.

Room Tip: I don't think this restaurant and hotel are suitable for wheelchair access as there are several...

“Consistantly Good”

My wife and I recently returned to the Dartmoor Inn for another excellent meal. We have been coming to the Dartmoor Inn for over ten years and always use it for special occasions.

The food as usual was excellent, small portions which suite us both as we can then manage three courses. My wife had the chicken liver pate which she found excellent and I had the red mullet. We then both had the partridge which was perfectly cooked followed by the mini chocalate dessert. All washed down with a bottle of excellent Italian red wine.

Don't come to the Dartmoor Inn if it's large portions you require, this is not pub grub. The food is local and is of the highest quality.

We will definately be returning.

Room Tip: Eat in the cosy snug.

“Great food but could be more welcoming.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

My partner and I had a meal here a few nights ago. Though we have never stayed at the inn, we have eaten here a number of times over the last ten years including special celebration meals with friends and family. The food has generally been very good though the service has been variable, ranging from excellent to just adequate. About 2006, we stopped going for that reason for several years.

On our latest visit on Nov 23 we had a delicious meal from the set menu, available during weekdays. Our starters of fish and seafood cake were very nice indeed. My partner's main course of hake and belly pork was, she says, absolutely delicious and one of the best 'British' style meals she has ever had. I had peppered venison steak which was also magnificent. Pud was spiced apple cake and it was gorgeous too.

The service was fine if a little cool, particularly in the bar area where we had a pre-dinner drink. We were the only diners in our section of the restaurant so the staff were not unduly busy. The bar area lacks ambience and has felt a little unwelcoming at times, especially when bar staff appear to be unaware you are there (even though the bar is very small).

We have rarely been disappointed by the quality of the food. Although portions are not generous, with three courses, they are adequate. A previous memorable meal was the double sirloin for two, beautifully cooked and presented.

Overall, a lack of consistency in service has been the one disappointing factor. The chef is highly skilled but slightly larger portions would be welcome for the premium prices charged for the a la carte menu.
