“Great food, beer and service but please dust the rooms!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012 via mobile

We recently stayed at the castle inn in lydford as they had a special accommodation deal at only £40 a night for double occupancy.
The pub is old and the bar is lovely, with fabulous open fires, well kept beers and local produce used for the bar meals.
Our room was extremely dated decorated in the 1980s and to be honest it didn't seem to have been dusted since!
I have slight asthma, rarely having to use my inhaylor, but used it constantly over the weekend. Huge cobwebs all over the room and dust coating the thin walls.
We could hear every word the occupants of the next room had to say as the walls are paper thin.
Great breakfast.
But everything seems very uncared for.

“lovely stay”

stayed here on the weekend 20th January 2012, for my husbands birthday. What a lovely place with a warm welcome. We had room 6 which is over the bar but the noise wasn't a problem, early on we could hear a gentle babble of voices but by the time we retired it was all quiet. the food is outstanding for a pub. (would recommend the Hake.) If you want posh this isn't the place for you, but if you don't mind a few cobwebs and lampshades that don't match. then don't hesitate

“Classic Devonian Heritage Dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

This old inn, next to Lydford Castle, offers a high quality but limited menu (game, steak and fish) in historic surroundings - period wooden furniture, stone flooring, nooks and crannys and log fires in winter. Good locak beer selection and wine menu. Recommended for mature groups with good taste. A remote location so a willing driver needed if not hotel residents.

“Fab find!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2011

I booked at short notice and got a very good deal on bed and breakfast. It's easy to find and has ample parking. It's a very pretty village with a lot of history and the pub is next to the ruins of the castle.. It is a ruin and takes half an hour to see!
Walking in to the pub it oozes charm and warmth. The bar is well stocked with real ales and most are from St Austels and all are well kept ( as I sampled them myself to make sure!) we booked the four poster bedroom which was above the bar but as the bar closes at a reasonable time we figured it wouldn't matter and in truth we heard very little from the bar. It was en suite with clean beds and linen. It is an old building so one has to expect it won't be perfect and in truth the minor imperfections added to the charm of the room.
We reserved a table for 8pm and hit the bar at six ish. The locals ere friendly and we had the choice of eating in the lounge the snug or the bar. The snug is very cosy and can seat upto six on each of the two tables - informal and private.
We ate in the lounge next to a roaring open fire. I had the pate for starter and the award winning beef pie! The wife had salmon for her starter and steak for her main. We both gushed about the food throughout the meal and were stuffed after but having seen the deserts go out to other tables ordered pudding as well.
The next morning, breakfast was a choice of cereal to start with followed by a full English which was let down by the lack of black pudding!
All in all a truly fab find and we will back as it had everything we wanted. Tip for clothing- being in Dartmoor it rains a lot so bring waterproofs and walking boots

Room Tip: Each of the rooms is very different and it's worth getting more detail over the phone. I had to...

“Devon Coast to Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

We were cycling from Woolacombe to Plymouth over four days, eating at pubs along the way. Being cyclist and just having worked up a massive appetite we stopped for lunch.

The pub is clearly popular and was busy. This didn't affect the service and they were happy to bring our food out to us all the way in the front of the pub.

I ordered the award winning Steak and Ale Pie, which was delicious. Came with vegetables that were tasty and I licked my platter clean. They also had Crabbies Alcoholic Ginger Beer which made me happy.

My husband had a no fuss steak and chips meal and didn't talk to me until his food was finished.

Pub was very accomodating and allowed us to charge our batteries.
