The website looked fantastic and when we turned into the glorious sweeping tree-lined driveway we thought we had arrived at somewhere special. Alas that was not to be so. The place was deserted or so it seemed. After what seemed to be an absolute age, a member of staff appeared, took one look at us and went again. Eventually, we were "seen to". Although the place seemed empty, they assured us that we would need to book for dinner which was an interesting experience. The home-produced meat was not up to much and we certainly wouldn't buy some to take home which was suggested. The bacon at breakfast must have been cut off a pygmy piglet - quite a joke. Our room was musty, tired and in urgent need of some TLC. It had obviously been a superb bedroom about 20 years before but clearly not a penny had been spent on it since. It was fairly clean although there were cobwebs behind the loo and above the bed. There was no soap but some secondhand bubble bath left in the bathroom. There was only half a toilet roll and 3 tissues in a small box. Not enough towels and just generally a feeling that nobody cared. That was to be confirmed later when we met, who we later found out to be the manager. He was not what you would expect to find in an expensive country hotel. He really looked as if he could do with some new clothes, a bath and a good haircut The staff were generally scruffy. There is clearly a severe lacking of care, funds and expertise here. What a shame. Our dogs enjoyed their stay far more than we did and we certainly won't forget our costly experience at Holne Chase, not to be repeated. Best take all your own towels, toiletries etc.
