We served at nearby RAF Chivenor more than 20 years ago and had promised ourselves ever since that we must go back one day and stay in
the Saunton Sands Hotel. We finally did so for three nights. Our rate included breakfast but not dinner. On arrival it was immediately obvious this was an old fashioned hotel with old fashioned values, the porter and all the staff made us feel very welcome. We quickly discovered that the "preferred dress" for dinner was jacket & tie - something I had not brought with me. As it was preferred but not mandatory we decided we would still eat in the restuarant but during pre-dinner drinks it was apparant that all guests had followed the preferred option. We therefore took the less formal option of dinner in the Terrace Lounge. We were given a table in the large "ballroom" where the lighting was extremely bright, and with only one other couple seated the atmosphere was cold and empty and far from ideal! The room was also being prepared throughout for a disco. The food was not great either: my soup starter was not warm enough, my wife's home made burger was OK, my first choice for main course was not available, my second choice was Salmon Nicoise salad which turned out to be very small and served on bread? It transpired that it was a mistake - they had given me another starter portion. Our waiter handled the problem very well but it further spoiled the experience. We ate at local pubs for the rest of our stay.
The sea view room was very good but the en-suite was very narrow and disappointing. The adjacent room's bathroom was behind a stud wall with insufficient sound deadening and our "neighbours" could be heard carrying out their ablutions!
The biggest disappointment for us however was breakfast. If you want it at a civilised time of day - it is an unseemly bunfight! There is a scrum round the toaster and an endless queue for the buffet. If you can bear the queue (we could not on day 2 and just had toast) the plates are simply not warm enough to keep the luke-warm breakfast acceptably warm. On our final day we got up early to avoid the rush and the whole experience was much better although the food was still not hot enough. We mentioned this to our waiter who said he would check the temperature but we watched and he did nothing. The set-up simply can not cope with the number of guests.
Overall, the setting is stunning, the staff are excellent, the rooms are probably as good as they can be without a complete rebuild but the food was a disappointment. I mentioned these items when asked (after I had paid) and the receptionist said she would get the manager. He listened to all my points and I got the district impression that he had heard this all before - he apologised and ponted out that the dress code was in the booking Terms & Conditions - something we all know is for legal redress not guest information. He also said tray service in the Dinning Room was available but as I said - that makes you look pretentious and feel uncomfortable. He thanked me for talking to him rather than writing on that "dreaded Trip Advisor". Well in my view that is exactly what Trip Advisor is for - our business is on and I would never try to dissuade a customer from using it - good or bad. You read and decide.
