“A Perfect Treat”

Unfortunately we could only stay one night as we were very comfortable at this beautiful small hotel. Martin the proprietor welcomed us and showed us to the end room overlooking the island. The views from this hotel can hardly be bettered. All the rooms are tastefully decorated in keeping with the age of the hotel and are spotlessly clean. We requested dinner at the time of booking, Martin is a very accomplished chef and our meal was absolutely outstanding. I had the the most tender and flavoursome fillet steak ever. I can only hope we are able to visit again.

“Fantastic experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

We made the mistake of eating at the Oyster Shack rather than at the hotel Other guests said the food was fantastic.

The rooms are boutique grade, the views are spectacular, the hosts are warm, friendly and welcoming, and the daughter and dog make the place magical.

A little bit of heaven. Our American guests said it is the best hotel they have ever stayed in, and we would second the comment.

“Wonderful, romantic short break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

With just 5 guest rooms this is a small, comfortable, intimate hotel. I stayed for 3 nights with my husband in one end room, with splendid views over the river mouth and Burgh Island, whilst my sister, her husband and 2 dogs had the other end room which is slightly bigger.
Breakfast is a very relaxed affair; however, whether you choose the full English or poached kippers, it is worth waiting for. As the weather was a little cloudy on the Sunday we choose to spend the morning relaxing in the comfortable lounge to read the papers looking out over the wonderful sea views. The Henley is very much a home from home (if you are lucky enough to have such wonderful views that is!). A lovely touch is the binoculars left in all of the rooms including the conservatory and lounge. If you want an evening meal at the hotel, they do need notice as we found out when, even giving 26 hours notice early on Saturday evening wasn’t enough. It was a shame as the one evening meal that we did book was excellent. However, we ate at the splendid Oyster Shack just 10 minutes drive away which I can recommend. We didn’t meet Martin, the proprietor, until we checked out which was a shame as he seemed to be very friendly particularly as his foreign wife did seem to be cold although polite on occasion.
The Henley Hotel is perfect for a relaxing, romantic break, not to be recommended for families. The surrounding area is in a time warp, unspoilt by modern commercialism, accessed by single track roads with passing places, so don’t expect funfairs and slot machines. We hope to return one day.

fabulous place, like staying in someone's home, which it was! the owners are marvellous. the views both from bedrooms and from garden are beyond words. breakfast delightful. so superior to the pretentious Thurlestone at 3 times the price.dont tell anyone. keep it a secret. but our bedroom was very tiny and bathroom just a cupboard although totally spotless and all mod cons. will return specially to stay there but must ask for one of the 2 glorious end rooms which we crept into to inspect and were superb, huge, moutains of room, luxurious bathrooms etc etc. absolutely delightful

“Fabulous hotel, fabulous location and FABULOUS food.”

What a superb weekend we've just had for my birthday. We arrived on the Friday evening after a stressful journey and we were made to feel so welcome it was like meeting up with old friends. The hotel only has 5 bedrooms so is charming and personal. Petra and Martyn, the owners, are superb hosts, as is their dog Kasper, who puts his nose round the door every so often to see if everything is well and then trundles off to his own quarters.
The food is truly delicious, cooked to perfection by Martyn. Be it breakfast or dinner the quality is superb. As others have said here the choice is mainly limited to 2 dishes for each course and Petra comes and delivers the menu verbally in her own endearing and charming way. The meals are made even more enjoyable because of the beautiful scenery you can see from the restaurant, panoramic views of the cove extending to Burgh Island which is set on its own and is linked to Devon by a tidal causeway.
We will definitely be going back next year if not before. Thank you very much to Petra, Martyn and staff, and Kasper of course for giving us such a lovely weekend :)
