With just 5 guest rooms this is a small, comfortable, intimate hotel. I stayed for 3 nights with my husband in one end room, with splendid views over the river mouth and Burgh Island, whilst my sister, her husband and 2 dogs had the other end room which is slightly bigger.
Breakfast is a very relaxed affair; however, whether you choose the full English or poached kippers, it is worth waiting for. As the weather was a little cloudy on the Sunday we choose to spend the morning relaxing in the comfortable lounge to read the papers looking out over the wonderful sea views. The Henley is very much a home from home (if you are lucky enough to have such wonderful views that is!). A lovely touch is the binoculars left in all of the rooms including the conservatory and lounge. If you want an evening meal at the hotel, they do need notice as we found out when, even giving 26 hours notice early on Saturday evening wasn’t enough. It was a shame as the one evening meal that we did book was excellent. However, we ate at the splendid Oyster Shack just 10 minutes drive away which I can recommend. We didn’t meet Martin, the proprietor, until we checked out which was a shame as he seemed to be very friendly particularly as his foreign wife did seem to be cold although polite on occasion.
The Henley Hotel is perfect for a relaxing, romantic break, not to be recommended for families. The surrounding area is in a time warp, unspoilt by modern commercialism, accessed by single track roads with passing places, so don’t expect funfairs and slot machines. We hope to return one day.
