We'd read the reviews, but for us it was a case of 'the only game in town'; we needed to be in Guernsey with our two dogs over Christmas, this was the only accommodation we could find that would take us and them at reasonable cost, and believe me we tried really hard!
As it turned out, our room was spacious, warm and dry, and the breakfast was freshly cooked to order and was adequate. We didn't have any other meals and did not take part in the social events, so we can't comment on these. And being Christmas, both the airport and the road outside were probably quieter than normal; neither was a problem. So far as we were concerned, it was just OK, and allowed us to be where we needed to be at an affordable cost. If this had been our main holiday of the year we'd probably have been disappointed, but we had read the other reviews so we knew exactly what others thought, and it was by no means as bad as it might have been. We certainly did not have any of the reported horrendous experiences.
It's a tired, barely 2-star hotel, which clearly had an illustrious past and has suffered from lack of ongoing investment and updating. It's what you might have routinely expected from any 2-star hotel in an English provincial seaside resort 20 years ago, but now we're all used to Travelodges and Quality Inns, newly built, bright, airy but impersonal, it seems worse than it really is. The bath/shower had been patched and looked really sad, but let's face it you want to get wet and clean - it's not the "Ideal Home" exhibition. The sofa was tired and saggy, but since we really only slept there that wasn't a problem either.
The thing this hotel has going for it is the staff, who were without exception kind, helpful, courteous and obliging. And the (new?) manager tells me that the hotel is about to embark on a significant investment in extension and refurbishment, with a view to regaining its former 3+ stars. But I'd guess this is going to depend to some extent on how the economy goes (my words).
When all's said and done, with any hotel you get what you pay for. This one doesn't pretend, doesn't claim anything it's not, and it does the job. In the same circumstances I'd happily go back.
