We spent 5 nights here in September 2009 and found it to be perfectly OK - nothing amazing but equally nothing awful. We stayed in room 207 (not sure which type of room this was as we found the tariffs/room types quite confusing on their website) which had a large seating area as well as the bedroom. On the positive side the bed was very comfortable and the room was large and at the back of the hotel so we didn't have the cars going past right outside. However on the negative side we did have the lorry coming to empty the cess pit underneath our window before 7am in the morning - with the windows shut and ear plugs in I still heard it as it was that loud so would say this was not for light sleepers. Also when opening the bathroom window to let steam out after a shower there was an acrid smell, perhaps from a generator, which was not so good.
The breakfast was nice, although it was exactly the same every day so felt a little limited after 5 days. It consists of a choice of juice/cereals, croissants, local gache (fruit bread), yoghurt, ham, cheese, toast and an excellent homemade damson jam plus a cooked breakfast (kippers, smoked haddock, fried/poached/scrambled/boiled eggs or full English breakfast) so very filling and plentiful. However we never heard anyone ask for kippers or haddock and I got bored of eggs so it would be nice if they could offer something different e.g. pancakes, waffles with maple syrup. I did enquire whether pancakes would be possible but was told it wasn't and the waitress didn't feel inclined to ask the chef.
We had some nice meals in the restaurant. The slow roasted lamb shank on mash was especially delicious. The restaurant does seem popular so it is wise to book a table; although they did fit us in at short notice on a couple of evenings.
It does have a pool and it does have beauty treatments at The Lavender Rooms but we didn't try either.
We hadn't hired a car before we left as we thought we'd try and get around on the bus. We did this the first day but the frequency of the buses from outside the hotel is every 2 hours (it's more frequent on the coast roads) and the last bus back from St Peter's Port on the Saturday is 6pm so quite limiting. Hence we ended up hiring a car from Value cars. They delivered a car to the hotel before 10am on the Sunday and gave us a discount as we were staying at Fleur du jardin so we'd recommend them. Hiring a car is probably essential to get around more effectively unless you've got a lot of time on your hands/on the island. By the way it cost us £7.20 for a taxi from airport to the hotel.
Finally some general comments about Guernsey: 1) Sunday lunch at the Palm Court restaurant at Fermain Valley hotel was delicious 2) likewise Cobo Tea rooms is well worth a visit as the tea and cakes were great and very good value 3) we tried afternoon tea at Old Government House as the weather wasn't great one day and we wanted something to do. It was not worth the money at approx. £8 each. Even though afternoon tea had only just started and the description of afternoon tea in their menu listed cream it arrived without any and when we enquired they advised they had run out of cream for the scones. When we insisted on some cream the chef made some but it was very runny and not really worth the wait 4) we found the Tourist Information Office to be sarcastic and not particularly helpful - we did however call in on a Saturday so may be the weekend staff are different to those on the desk during the week 5) we found Oatlands mini golf course to be well kept, challenging and a whole lot of fun 6) we enjoyed a day trip to Herm and a walk around the island takes about 3 hours at a nice leisurely pace.
