“Not a bad place to stay”

Four of us recently stayed at Ommaroo 23 - 26th October 2011. We found the hotel staff really pleasant and helpful. Offered to go to shop to get us a paper? On the first morning we arrived quite early, but one of our rooms was ready the other wasn't. I wasn't expecting either as it was early. We asked for breakfast and we were served a full english which was really good. We had two rooms side by side in the renovated part of the hotel. I have to say they were really nicely decorated ample in size with a good size clean bathroom, with great power shower and hot water every time we used it. Basically the room had more than enough room with a good sized wall mounted TV and triple wardrobe. Even though these rooms were front facing basement level rooms, we did not get any noise from traffic which was great. The only thing I could fault was a lack of a bar, I would definitely recomend Jersey and the Ommarroo for a short break.

We went to Jersey out of season but during Tennerfest, if you like good food at reasonable prices, you must go to Jersey between 1st October and Mid November. We chose three restaurants.

Doran's Courtyard Bistro - Kensington Place
Roseville two roads on from Ommarroo
Aromas Restaurant - Kensington Place

3 great places to dine and would definitely recommend the food and atmosphere.

Room Tip: The rooms on the newly renovated side seems to be the better option

Chose St Helier for a short late summer break.
Hotel - good and not so good. Location - easy reach of town centre (8 mins walk), and pleasant location. Newsagent/general stores nearby (2 mins). Beach and sea-water pool (swimmming club premises open to public) literally over the road - and clean and well-maintained.
Not so good - lack of bar (low season so staffing levels were given as a partial reason; however drinks service e.g. with evening meal was ok. But a lack of "finesse" was a bit evident. With not many residents, and all having permanently allocated tables for evening meals for length of stay - please, please put a jug of water on the table - that's an easy plus and also would be welcoming (especially as the weather was unusually good for 4 full days).
Meals ok - although vegetable selection/presentation was on occasion a bit sparse and garnishes with e.g. starters could be better. Drinks prices - average (however wine list mark-ups so typical of too many hotels - absurdly high, and in my opinion not good value for money, although wine sthemselves ok). Dining room - clean, well maintained.
Choice of cooked breakfast/fresh fruit etc. - good.
Room - ground floor with sea view across coast road was clean (in new wing of hotel), well-maintained and serviced (a few extra wardrobe hangers would be nice - 6 is a bit sparse even for a week's stay). Bathroom - good - although found a broken mixer on the sink tap which was reported and duly repaired. But absent vanity shelf (yet fittings for it were present over the sink) suggested more might be done to enhance room fitments. Tea/coffee facilities and TV in room - good. Bed - comfortable if a little small. My room faced the road, but traffic noise was (even with open windows) not problematic.

Hotel - generally ok, a little worn in places. Useful information display board and leaflets - although one or two items were (unfortunately) out-of-date. Staffs - friendly, welcoming.

All in all, I'd stay again, but I suspect competition is tough, and prices/overall value for a weeks stay (HB in my case) ultimately don't compare too well with popular European destinations (e.g. Spain, Canaries etc).

Room Tip: Suspect new wing rooms are furnished to better standards - but not verified

“Smashing short break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

Stayed with my wife for 4 nights 18-22 Sep.
Receptionist very attentive and offered us the opprotuniy to dine in the restaurant even though we had arrived after bookings had closed. Declined , but offered meal in the loung bar or room service. Porter showed us to a refurbished room at the end of the corridor after a short climb of stairs. Quiet room overlooking the free car park , garden and the kitchen.

Room spotlessly clean and well decorated. Then realised it wasnt quite as good as it should have been as the bath panel had been removed and not replaced! Rather large gaping hole where tiles should been. Never mind , all clean, tidy and working.
Not as quiet as it should have been either when' the turn' started in the lounge bar immediately below our window. At least he stopped by 2300 hrs. Also a bit noisy in the morning when the kitchen started. Rooms in this annex above the dining room on this side even numbered, so if you want quiet ask for an odd numbered room though the view is poor, over the rubbish in the yard!!
Our room was one of the new interconnecting rooms and whilst the door was locked, sound proof it was not!

For what we paid, the room was very good with biccies and coffee/tea etc re filled every day and towels changed. Very good 6' wide bed. Self service breakfast excellent. As much or as little as you desire.
Didn't eat in the restaurant at night as the menu was not for me. Beetroot risotto? Goats cheese stuffed chicken ? If this is for you then it might be good value, but there are so many better restaurants not too far away I think B & B is better anyway. If the hotel menu for any particular day suits you then use it .

This our second visit to the Ommmaroo and as we like the location, free car park, breakfast etc we will probably stay again if we return to Jersey.

An old fashioned hotel, well liked by more seasoned travellers. Not good for the less abled due to number of stairs.
Pleased to say there were no children in the hotel when we stayed and that was good.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished odd number room above the dining room but not right at the end of the corridor...

“A hotel with character”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011

We returned to the Ommaroo Hotel at the end of August 2011. We think this was our fifth stay at the hotel.

The reasons why we return are quite simple. The staff are very friendly and helpful. We stay half board, with quite differing cuisine requirements. One who will eat anything, a vegetarian and a fussy 14 year old. And finally, the location is ideal. It is very close to the beach, a ten minute walk to Regent's Fort or the shops at St Helier, but very quiet in the evenings.

The hotel is victorian and has considerable character.

“Much better than I expected from previous reviews.”

Wondered what to expect but we 2 couples were given lovely refurbished rooms in a quiet annex. Spotlessly clean, serviced beautifully every day.Tea and coffee and biscuits ,excellent tv reception.Staff at reception helpful and friendy. We had a few stairs to climb as no lift in our wing but when our rooms were ready on arrival day 2 little female receptionists whipped our cases up for us and they were heavy cases too. !! The Manager was always around and asking if everything was alright.Breakfast was very good and plenty of choice. One small complaint. The toast was only half done and not crisp. New toasters are needed I think. I totally agree that the evening menu was very unimaginative. We were glad to be on B&B not half board but had plenty of places on a short walk to have lovely meals out and we did actually stay in on the Sunday night as there was Roast beef on the menu. Yes we would stay there again if assured of being in the up dated rooms. It was nice to be on the seafront rather than in busy St Helier town. Buses stopped almost outside the Hotel to get to The Bus Station.Oh and our breakfast waiter was lovely too.!

Room Tip: Ask for refurbished rooms and it was nice and quiet at the back of the Hotel too. Not suitable where...
