“Tired and out of the way”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 June 2009

While the room was clean and the mattress comfortable, this guest house could use some major updating. The furnishings and decor were very tired looking. It is a solid 20 minute walk to the bus terminus. There is a fair amount of street noise that echoes up into the rooms. The proprietress could be a bit friendlier. Breakfast, while good, is served in a drab dining area. Vacuums are sitting out on the stair landings.

Not the most welcoming or relaxing place to stay. (But a fair value for the island.)

Given the good bus connections on Jersey, we regretted not staying outside the city. St. Aubin and Gorey would have been better options.

“Somewhat disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2008

Booking:
I booked this guest house through the official Jersey Tourism website - www.jersey.com, for a one-night stay at the beginning of August 2008. I booked this guest house as I was pleased to find that they catered for the single traveller and was booked into a single room, with a sink but no other ensuite facilities (known at time of booking) for £29 per night (£2 extra surcharge for a single night's stay...)

Location:
I found the guest house to be a relitively easy walk from the centre of St Helier. The guest house is located in a terrace almost at the end of Simon Place, and thus is long and thin. There are some pretty plants in the window boxes and hanging baskets adorning the front of the property which somehwat 'lifts' its appearance.

Parking:
I was glad that I didn't have a car with me, as there was very limited parking at the front of the property, with little on-street as the guest house is located quite close to the end of the road and the junction of a through route. There is a set of traffic lights almost outside the property and consequently I noticed some traffic noise whilst in my room.

Bedroom:
The bedroom was basic though big enough for a one-night stay as a single traveller. The bed was comfortable but as the room was so small there was no bedside table, though a small table with tea and coffee making facilities was situated on the other side of the room. There was also a wash basin and towels were provided. The TV was located high up on the wardrobe and was difficult to reach for a short person. There was no remote control to be found, so you couldn't control the TV from your bed. The walls adjoining other bedrooms appeared to be quite thin, and noise could be heard from other guest talking in a normal voice through the wall; TV's could also be heard.

Bathroom:
This was shared with other guests and was very clean and modern. There was a toilet, washbasin and shower.

Guest Areas:
The hallway and entrance are somewhat cramped, as there are tables or sideboards of tourist infomation in there.
The guest house advertises that there is a guest lounge - but unless I missed it the only lounge that I could see was the one at the front of the property, which seemed to be in use by the owners (who had family to stay at the time of my visit). This was a disappointment, as with the room being so small it would have been nice to have a separate lounge to relax in.

The dining room is accessed through the above lounge and was quite small. It is adorned with several photos of the owners with celebrities and their personal mementos. I also notice two large bags of golf clubs taking up quite a lot of room in the dining area. As a golfer myself, I can understand the room they take up but would have thought there could be a better storage area for them (if they are the owner's, they could have been a guest's?).

Breakfast was adequate and I had my choice of a full cooked breakfast, or cereals with toast (I opted for the latter as I don't eat cooked often). My only concern regarding breakfast is that it is served quite late in the morning - 0830 to 0930, which is probably too late for a business traveller; whether an earlier breakfast could be requested of the owners is something which would have to be investigated.

Overall, for the money the guest house was adequate, but the lack of a guest lounge was disappointing, and the late breakfast was awkward. Definitely not a hotel for the disabled, as the rooms and bathrooms are located up and down several sets of stairs.

“Quaint B&B”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2008

We have just come back from a weekend in Jersey. We were struggling to find accomadation and something reasonably priced. After searching the internet we contacted the Caverna Guest House.
The rooms were a nice size had a double bed, fridge TV and tea and coffee making facilities. It was ensuite and were very very clean.
We had eggs and bacon everyday included in the price.
The Caverna is a typical B&B with flowery curtains but it is just like the pictures.
The owners were friendly too.
